Charles paused, then answered after a long time with deep and serene eyes.
"...Okay."
He would remember this and make sure she paid him back double.
Sophia breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that he had agreed to comply, then shifted to the front passenger seat and fastened her seat belt.
There was still an air of lingering intimacy in the car.
Sophia stared at the car window uneasily and was startled when she saw a red-faced woman in the window. She straightened her neck and looked straight ahead.
She let out a hollow cough and asked, "About the new lung cancer drug that you and Mr. Fredrickson planned to delay..."
She started the topic but did not know how to proceed.
"It's absolutely normal for new drugs to be delayed. If Grandpa can't make it through, then one can only say that he isn’t lucky enough." Charles’ countenance was mild. "Just like the time he sent you to prison. If you were… killed by an inmate, he would also say that you are not lucky enough.”
Sophia felt relieved after hearing what he said but also felt a chill at the same time.
She was relieved because she need not feel apprehensive living under Master Harris' influence anymore as he would not live much longer without the support from the new drugs.
She was fearful because if Charles was able to use this method to deal with Master Harris, then others could use the same method to deal with them.
Not even the law could punish them if the killing was done without shedding a single drop of blood.
The world was so cruel and realistic that it was terrifying.
After getting out of the car, Charles carried Sophia inside.
She was not used to displaying such intimacy in public as she would feel immensely awkward. Despite that, it was useless for her to resist. He said that wearing high heels would not be good for the baby, hence he forcefully picked her up and entered the villa.
When the car pulled over at the entrance, James led several servants outside to greet them.
He was extremely surprised when he saw this scene, though what came after his surprise was an undisguised delight.
"You guys seem really tight, Charles and Soph. You’re just like Aunt Jenny and me when we were young." James ordered a servant to grab some fruits and tea while he sat on the couch talking to Charles.
After they entered the living room, Charles took off Sophia's high heels and stretched out his hand to massage her feet. "Oh, is that so? I'm not treating her well enough then. There’s still plenty of room for improvement."
James froze for a moment before realizing that Charles was saying that he was not treating Jenny good enough.
Sophia did not even bother to pay attention to the look on his face. Her face had heated up completely.
She exerted some strength in an attempt to retract her foot. Charles might look like he was not using any force at all, but he was keeping a firm grip on her foot.
Just as she was about to retract her foot, he dropped his head and made a motion as though he was about to kiss her foot and calf, frightening her so much that she dared not move anymore for fear that he would do something worse than that.
"That’s my baby!" Charles smiled and stroked her head as though to praise her.
Sophia, "..."
Even her neck had turned pink.
"I'm drowsy so I’ll be going upstairs to get some rest now." Sophia ran straight up to the second floor barefooted.
As soon as she came to the lowest step of the staircase, a pair of hands pressed on her waist, and immediately after that, her entire body lifted in the air—Charles had picked her up horizontally.
"Is the ground not cold at all?" Charles lowered his eyes to gaze at her. "Hmm?"
Sophia put her arms around his neck without uttering a single word.
Charles let out a playful laugh, planted a gentle kiss on her forehead, and then walked towards the second floor holding her in his arms.
"Charles, about the thing we agreed—" James was planning to make small talk with him before asking about these things at first, but Charles did not give the opportunity to do so, hence he had no choice but to cut to the chase now.
Charles did not even stop. His voice was mild. "Tomorrow or the day after tomorrow—the latest. Harris Corporation will send a representative to discuss the details with you."
Sophia had no choice but to sit down and eat. However, she was eating much faster than usual. She finished her meal in a hurry and wiped her mouth. "You can continue eating. I’ll go and see Madam Johnson first."
"Let's go together." Charles stood up, then took her hand and walked out.
Sophia struggled a little. "Let’s not hold hands in front of our elders."
She could not help but feel embarrassed.
Charles did not let go. He raised his eyebrows. "We’re already expecting a baby, so what if I hold your hand for a while?"
Sophia could not win the argument with him. Besides, apart from being a little too lovey-dovey, couples holding hands was something normal indeed.
The two entered the living room with their fingers interlocking with each other. Shawn and Madam Johnson were both there. The former, however, looked terribly sullen. It was obvious that he was reluctant to be here.
"You’re done eating already? You can take your time. I don’t have a lot of things to do anyway. I’m not in a rush at all!" Madam Johnson’s smile carried a hint of flattery.
Shawn snorted, looking like he was about to say something but twitched his mouth and said nothing after seeing Charles.
Sophia found it difficult to develop a liking for this elder, but the other party was her mother's friend, so she was in no position to say anything. Moreover, she was the one asking for a favor this time.
"Sorry to keep you waiting." Sophia apologized and ordered the servant to prepare fruits, snacks, and tea.
"I didn’t wait long at all. Don’t worry, there’s no rush!" Madam Johnson said to her before looking a little anxiously at Charles. "Mr. Harris, about the partnership you mentioned?"
Sophia was slightly taken aback. Was there a partnership involved in this?
"I’m too lazy to go to the company on a Saturday. I figured that since you and Madam White are best friends, I’ll just invite you here to discuss the partnership. I hope you don’t mind," Charles said.
Madam Johnson was smiling so hard that her eyes were narrowed to slits. "You’re too polite, Mr. Harris. We are truly blessed to be able to cooperate with Harris Corporation. It’s no big deal even if we have to wait for a while!"
Shawn could not endure it any longer after hearing what she said and said sarcastically, "Would you partner up with me when you’re so close to Zachary, Mr. Harris? Why do I have a feeling that this is just a trick?"
Madam Johnson glared at him, but his neck remained straight as he fixed his gaze on Charles.
