Charles frowned faintly and glanced at her phone screen. He could not even catch a glimpse of the content of the conversation, but he could see the name of her chat partner, Dr. Hemingway.
"A miscarriage is most likely to occur within the first three months of pregnancy, so it's best to keep things like mobile phones and computers further away from you. I'll hold them for you." He did not give her time to react and took her mobile phone away directly.
Sophia licked her dry lips and said, "...Remember to let me know when someone sends me a message."
Charles hummed in reply.
In the living room, Nicole, James, and Sterling, who had been especially busy lately, were all there. The three of them were talking about something, and the atmosphere seemed rather pleasant.
When he saw Sophia coming in, Sterling sprung up from his seat and said with a beaming smile, "Soph, I just sealed a huge deal with Lenyess Corporation! The Russell family has invited me to an evening party that they will be holding the day after tomorrow. You should go with me!"
Lenyess Corporation was a well-known company of the Russell family, but its business was mainly focused on the United States, Japan, New Zealand, and other countries with very few involvements domestically, investing only in Harris Corporation.
Sterling managing to strike up a relationship with someone from Lenyess Corporation had come as a complete shock for anyone in the domestic business circle.
Sophia was stunned for a moment before saying in surprise, "Congratulations, Sterling."
"There’s nothing to congratulate about, really. This is just your brother’s pure dumb luck!" Before Sterling could speak, James said first, "He helped an old man on the road and that old man happened to be the head of the Russell family, that’s why he gave Sterling this opportunity to work together!"
After hearing what he said, Sterling looked extremely displeased. "Do you think just about anyone can have pure dumb luck? You can't have it even if you want it!"
"Luck is also part of capability. Just like you, Dad, if you hadn’t been lucky enough to marry Mom back then, then you wouldn’t be the president of White Industries now," Sophia said with a mild countenance.
James frowned, looking slightly sulky. "I was working when others were having the time of their lives! I achieved everything I have right now with my own hands. It’s not as simple as you said it is!"
"Hah." Sophia sneered. "If Grandpa and Grandma hadn’t left the company behind for you, do you think a poor student like you could achieve your current status today in just twenty years?"
James was immensely annoyed every time someone said that everything he achieved today was from his wife’s family. Flushed with anger, he said, "You—"
"I'm not deaf. You don’t need to be so loud, Dad." Sophia cut him off.
James' chest was heaving violently. The words had reached his throat, but he harrumphed and swallowed his words when he glanced at Charles standing next to her.
"Forget it. Sterling has finally done something right for once. I’m not going to argue with you." His words took on another form when they came out of his mouth.
Sophia tugged at her lips scornfully.
Sterling was pretty delighted at first but now looked pretty sullen after his father spoke like that.
He walked up to James and said crossly, "I can guarantee you that I will not compete with you for White Industries as long as you live. You don't have to guard against me like you’re guarding against a thief."
James' face heated up at his words and averted his gaze, saying, "I’m only saying these things to discourage you because I’m afraid that you will get too proud.”
Sterling ignored him and walked up to Sophia and Charles instead. He reached out curiously and touched her belly, saying with delight, "Soph, Nicole told me that I am going to be an uncle soon."
"Mm." Sophia's eyes softened unconsciously when the topic shifted to her child.
Charles' gaze fell on Sterling's irksome hand, then reached out and smacked it away.
James put his chopsticks on the bowl and said with a grim look on his face, "Lisa, if you’re a servant, then you should behave like one! You think I don’t know that you’re Sterling’s cousin sister? Why don’t you tell me where you’ve claimed your connections from then?"
Lisa harrumphed heavily with crimson eyes, stomped her foot, and went upstairs to get Jenny.
"Your mother insists on taking her in even when I don’t want her!" James said angrily, "A person like that is simply a thankless wretch who will never grow up! Your brother tried to persuade your mother but it didn’t work. You should talk to your mother and think of a way to dismiss her."
Sophia rarely concurred with him and hummed in response. She turned to look at Charles who was sitting next to her and asked him for her phone, switching it on and tapping on it several times.
After a while, Lisa came downstairs with Jenny, sobbing and complaining loudly. "It’s not like I didn’t do any work at all, Aunt Jenny. I have finished everything that needs to be done. Don’t you think Uncle James has gone too far when he says things like that about me?"
Sophia stood up and stared at her with a mild countenance. "Lisa, why does the necklace on your neck look so familiar?"
"Huh? I saw it in your room and liked it very much. I’m just borrowing for two days!" Lisa said nonchalantly.
Sophia asked, "You’re borrowing it for two days? Why don't I recall you saying anything about that?"
"Fine, I’ll take it off then. It's just a necklace. Must you be so worked up about it?" Lisa’s face was flushed and cried as she tried to yank the necklace off. “What kind of human are you! You don’t even treat me as your cousin anymore just because you have that bit of stinking money!"
Sophia pretended as though she did not hear her complaints and said, "Be careful. This necklace costs two hundred thousand bucks. You will need to pay the full price if it breaks."
Lisa was slightly gentler in her actions after hearing what she said. She took off the necklace crossly and put it on the table, then turned around and was about to bolt outside.
"You should behave like a servant if you’re paid the salary." Sophia said, “Once you leave this house today, you don't have to come back anymore. I will calculate and settle your final salary this instant."
