Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around! novel Chapter 313

Sophia scoffed and replied with a sneer, “Mr. Jones, why are you telling me all of this now? Do you think I’ll be touched?”

“No, I’m just trying to tell you that my family is not who I thought them to be.” William’s eyes were dim, and his exhaustion was undisguisable.

Sophia did not want to hear him talk about this, nor did she want to see his face anymore. “Are you done? If you are, I’m going to leave now.”

“When the people around me found out that I’m severing ties with my family, they tried to persuade me to go home. When I still refused, my family threatened them to cut all ties with me.

“Sophia, I suddenly understand how you felt two years ago. It’s like your entire world has crumbled, and everyone you thought you knew had changed all of a sudden. It’s like waking up in a dream, but so much worse. No, perhaps I don’t even understand a fraction of the pain you went through.

“Sophia, I’m truly… Sorry.” William was no longer as arrogant as before. Now, he just seemed more like a low-life.

Sophia lowered her eyes and paused. When she walked past him, she said coldly, “Take care.”

Her tone, though gentle and light, sounded like a rumble of rolling thunder in William’s ears. His eyes suddenly lit up as he grabbed her arm and said, “Don’t worry about the payment over at White Industries. I figured there was no harm trying, so I reached out to Leah and she has already agreed to send over the money latest by 12 midnight.”

The only person that made him feel somewhat gratified now was Leah. She had not expected him to be as cold as he was.

Sophia stopped in her tracks and shrugged his hand away. “I thought I was the biggest idiot all along, but it turns out, you’re actually worse than me.” She snorted.

“... What do you mean?” William was utterly confused.

“Do you think that Leah only agreed to help you when you reached out to her because she feels guilty?” Sophia asked.

William’s cracked lips trembled as he replied, “Doesn’t she?”

“Of course not.” Sophia flashed him a humorless smile. “It’s because I threatened her just earlier this afternoon.”

William’s eyes widened in shock. His face turned as pale as a sheet of white paper. He staggered a few steps backward and finally stabled himself by leaning on the wall behind him.

Leah… Leah!!!

“Goodbye.” Sophia had wanted to add that she hoped she would never see him again, but the words stopped at her throat. Turning a blind eye to William, who now seemed battered out of his senses, she took the escalator to the first floor.

Remembering that Maisie had called her earlier, she quickly returned the call.

“You did well for this task. Come back now. Mr. Harris is here to pick you up.” Compared to before, Maisie’s voice was now warmer and friendlier.

Sophia frowned slightly and hung up before hailing a taxi back to the office.

Right then, Thomas was just about to head out for an errand, so he bumped into her coincidentally. He flashed her a thumbs up excitedly. “You did really well this time. How did you get Jones Group to pay up?”

“Maybe it’s because I’m too pretty and Mr. Stewart finally softened up?” Sophia replied with a slight smile.

Seeing that she was reluctant to elaborate further, Thomas did not push her either. “Anyway, you really did a great job! I can’t talk to you any longer, I’m off to do something now!”

“See you, Thomas.” Sophia waved goodbye to him before heading up the elevator and going straight to the chief financial director’s office.

Charles was also present in the office. He was sitting across Maisie as they were in conversation. The conversation seemed to be going well as Maisie said, “If I was 20 years younger, I might be completely head over heels over you!”

“Well, I can only say that I’m glad you’re not head over heels over me. Otherwise, I might have to break your heart,” Charles said lightly as he glanced at Sophia.

Sophia pretended not to notice as she stood in the corner quietly. Upon seeing this, Charles frowned.

Charles had never tried to please a woman this badly, yet she was still giving him the cold shoulder. He straightened up and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt, his voice indifferent and cold with no hint of warmth as he asked, “Sophia, do you know what you’re doing?”

“You’re just upset because I didn’t do what you want, aren’t you?” Sophia bit her lip.

Charles’ expression was tense as he unconsciously drummed his fingers on the steering wheel.

“If I had discussed with you to get your permission before seeing Leah, would you still be upset with me? You’ll only be happy if I report to you every time I want to do something and if I follow your orders, am I right?” Sophia continued.

Charles frowned slightly. “Do you think that Leah will sit and do nothing after you caused Jones Group’s stock price to plummet this time?”

“That’s a different topic.” Feeling thirsty, Sophia opened a bottle of mineral water. “Charles Harris, I know that you’re used to giving people orders, but I don’t like being ordered around, and I don’t appreciate you making decisions for me.”

She laughed humorlessly before continuing, “Perhaps I would have liked it in the past, but after the car accident and everything that happened, I don’t anymore. Charles, your love makes me feel insecure.”

His love was so overwhelming that it made her feel as good as if she was in heaven, but at the same time, losing his love would be as dreadful as a living hell.

Charles furrowed his brows even more. “I told you before that my heart only belongs to you and only you.”

“You’re only 25 years old, you still have a long life ahead of you,” Sophia replied.

“I have faith in myself,” Charles said.

“But I don’t. The human heart is the most fickle thing.” Nobody could understand this saying better than her.

A woman could stay with a man for his money and wealth, but she could not just stay because he was good to her. Once the love was lost, she would have nothing left.
