“Don’t worry, I already have everything sorted out,” Charles said as he turned to her, his gaze and tone was slightly gentler than usual.
Sophia pulled out a piece of tissue to wipe off her sweaty palms. She responded with a muffled okay as her heart pounded rapidly against her chest.
A dozen security guards came over and prevented the reporters from crowding them, then only Sophia and the others were able to exit the car and entered the courthouse.
William was standing outside the courthouse just then. When he saw them approaching, he checked to see if there was anyone else before making his way toward Sophia.
“Mr. Jones, is there something wrong?” Charles immediately stepped in front of Sophia, inserting himself in between her and William.
William’s amber eyes darkened as he reached an arm out to push Charles away. When Charles did not budge, the dismay in William’s eyes intensified. “Mr. Harris, sorry to trouble you but do you mind stepping away for a minute? I need to talk to Sophia.”
“Mr. Jones, if there’s anything you need to tell my girlfriend, you can say it in front of me,” Charles continued as the look on his face remained indifferent.
The two men glared swords and daggers at each other wordlessly, the tension in the air thickened with a hint of aggressiveness whilst they exchanged harsh glares.
“I have nothing to say to you,” Sophia stepped forward from behind Charles and said coldly, then continued walking towards the courtroom.
William quickened his steps as he rushed forward and grabbed her by the arm. “Sophia, just apologize to Leah! She’ll drop the lawsuit if you apologize to her!”
“Let go of me.” The look of disgust and hatred in Sophia’s eyes was unmistakable.
Charles was about to step forward, but he immediately backed up when he saw the look in her eyes.
“Charles, aren’t you a sly old fox!” Zachary put his hand on Charles’s shoulder and sneered. “Being rejected by the person you love surely hurts more than being rejected by her boyfriend, don’t you think so? Oh, Mr. Jones, what a poor soul!”
Charles shoved him away in disgust. “If you think he’s such a poor thing, why don’t you become his boyfriend then? I wouldn’t mind.”
“No thanks! He only likes you——” Zachary continued speaking in a coquettish tone as he winked at Charles teasingly.
William was taken aback by Sophia’s harsh glare, and the instant he froze, she casually shrugged his firm grip off her arm.
Staring at his empty hand, he was furious yet helpless at the same time. “You were the one who’s at fault here. You’re the reason Leah’s disabled now, so don’t you think it’s only right that you apologize to her? Would you really rather hold on to your ego and go to jail for the rest of your life!?”
“Ha!” Sophia snorted coldly. She could not be bothered to continue this conversation with him any longer, and so she turned around.
William followed closely behind her and reached out for her wrist anxiously.
However, before he could even touch Sophia, she stopped in her tracks and turned to face him, closing the distance between the two of them.
“Your sister is still in the room, isn’t she? Aren’t you worried that she would misunderstand things if you continue to pester me like this?” Sophia asked snarkily.
Charles’s eyes darkened when he saw this, his right hand that rested beside his body began tapping his side anxiously.
Zachary chuckled in amusement and the scene unfolding before him as if he was watching an entertaining show.
William clenched his fists tightly and wiped away the troubled expression on his face. “Just think about it, okay? The second you enter the courtroom and they announce the jury’s decision, there’s no going back from any of it anymore!”
His tone softened as he continued in a pleading tone, “It’s just an apology, you just have to say a few words and you——”
“Mind your own business,” Sophia interrupted him impatiently as a frown grew on her face. Without giving him another chance to speak, she quickly strode forward to the courtroom.
Charles cast William a long, meaningful glance, the edge of his mouth turned slightly upward into an almost non-existent smirk. When he walked past William, he paused and said, “Mr. Jones, I believe you have gotten something wrong.”
However, Sterling was unable to stop worrying. “Are you sure?” He asked doubtfully.
“...Charles said he had already sorted everything out,” Sophia said with a slight frown. To be completely honest, she was not exactly sure what happened in the car accident that happened back then. On top of that, she was a mess right now.
Sterling immediately exploded when he heard her. “He said he sorted everything out and you believe him just like that? What if he’s lying? What if he has already gotten together with Leah before this and dealt behind your back?”
Right then, Jenny joined them. Her eyes were red and swollen, probably from crying too much.
When she saw Sophia’s pale, ghastly face, the tears fell again. “Soph, William told me that as long as you apologize to Leah, she’ll drop the lawsuit! Come on, why don’t you go and apologize to Leah?”
“I will take care of my own affairs, you don’t have to worry about me, Madam White,” Sophia said in an indifferent tone.
“Why can’t you understand that I’m doing this for your own good! The car accident was your fault so there’s nothing wrong in asking you to apologize to Leah!” Jenny’s voice was almost breaking as she sobbed out those words.
“Alright, you can be stubborn and not apologize, but what are you going to do if the jury decides to sentence you to another ten or twenty years in jail? You’re only twenty years old, your entire future and life will be ruined if you go to jail for such a long time!”
Sophia snorted sarcastically, her tone low and bitter when she spoke, “You’re doing this for my sake? You don’t need to think on my behalf, I can’t afford your care and effort!”
Jenny stared at Sophia blankly as tears continued rolling down her cheek. “Soph, please…”
“They’re about to start the court session soon. Ster, I have to leave now,” Sophia said to Sterling, before walking toward Charles without even sparing Jenny a glance.
How ridiculous!
Charles and Leah were the reason she was put in this spot in the first place, and yet she had to rely on Charles now in order to prove her innocence!
