Estelle's POV
Ethan and Lance were standing in the bathroom, they didn't want me to see the dead, gruesome werewolf again. But I asked the Alpha to let me stay anyway, and I wanted to know why he died in my room.
"There's not a speck of blood around the body." Ethan cruised through the bathroom. Indeed, I didn't even smell a trace of blood.
"Did you see anyone suspicious?" Lance turned to me and asked.
"No." I answered honestly.
Ethan turned over the werewolf's body, and Lance looked at the body's face and said, "I remember him, he was the one who patrolled the border."
"So they moved the body here to Estelle specifically?" Ethan asked him.
"I don't know why they brought Estelle into this, but they succeeded in pissing me off." I could hear the sound of Lance's teeth grinding together as he said the words.
I thought they would ask me something. The body was found in my room, and I should have been the first suspect. But now their reaction tells me that they already know who the murderer is.
"Do you know who did this?"
Lance gave me a look, he was still hesitant to say anything to me. Finally he spoke up.
"I didn't think this would involve you, and that's the last thing I wanted."
"What's going on?" I asked them.
Ethan picked up where he left off, "This werewolf, most likely, was killed by a vampire."
"What are you talking about?"
The word vampire is too foreign to me. Many years had passed since the last war between werewolves and vampires. The vampires lost badly and not many bloodlines are survived. So in recent decades, vampires and werewolves have not communicated with each other.
"I don't want to bring up your bad memories. But all the blood was drained from this corpse's body, and the wound on his neck was caused by a vampire's teeth." I remembered the bloody flesh on that corpse's neck, which could no longer be called a wound. It was like a hole torn by a wild animal.
"Are you sure? Aren't vampires almost extinct?"
"So we suspect that the guys who call themselves "nobles" are responsible. Now that a lot of wolves are doing this, it's obvious that the vampires are provoking us." Ethan's tone revealed a fierceness that I hadn't normally seen.
Lance pinched his brow "The body is still fresh, which means he was only moved here a short time ago. I'll get someone to find out who all passed through here."
"You're coming to live with me now."
Ethan and I looked at him with wide eyes at the same time, "What's the problem?" Lance asked us.
"Aren't you trying to hide her identity?" Ethan asked him.
"Now that the enemy has come to us, there is nothing to hide."
"But... My family." I looked at Lance.
"They will be properly housed."
"I want to be with them."
"Do you have any idea what kind of danger you're facing right now?" The look in Lance's eyes reminded me of the night I first met him, full of murderous intent.
"So you're going to lock me up and not let me see my family?"
"... No, I'm not going to lock you up. You come with me and I'll explain everything to you." Lance eased himself up.
This was my third visit to this lakeside villa, but this time there were many more guards around the villa. They were all familiar faces to me, and my family and I were brought here by them. The tall werewolf who gave my father anesthesia, whose entire arm was tattooed with intricate patterns, whose face I could always see around Lance.
"They'll be in charge of your safety." Lance followed my gaze.
"What about you?"
"I don't need to."
"Why are you so sure it's me? My father and brother live in that house too, what if the threat was directed at them?"
"Come with me and you'll see."
I followed Lance into his study, where he took a letter out of a drawer and handed it to me. On the darkly patterned paper was written in fancy letters "Mate Estelle".
"This is an anonymous letter I received two months ago, and a few days before I brought you back to the wolves."
"What does this letter mean? He knows about our relationship, and then what?"
"Remember those times we ran into each other?" Lance didn't answer my question positively.
"I remember." An Alpha running amok on the edge of a wolf pack late at night. When I passed out at the edge of the wolf pack, everyone thought I was attacked by a rogue.
"I was there to investigate, and that's when the first body attacked by a vampire appeared."
"That early? Then why weren't we informed."
"Because at first I didn't believe it was a vampire either, and their wounds were so damaged that I thought a transformed rogue had attacked them."
"But what does that have to do with the letter?"
"Because then I caught a vampire who was a little different from what I thought. Anyway, my men couldn't control it and they killed the vampire who went crazy. I found this letterhead from his body." Lance said and took out another piece of paper from the drawer, this crumpled paper still had a small amount of blood on it.
Then I saw the "Mate Estelle" in flower on the dark paper.
"You are so...!" I swallowed back the word "shameless" and turned around to leave.
"Wait a minute." Lance took my hand.
"What again?" I turned back with an unpleasant tone.
Lance handed me a brooch, and the silver iris came from my hand with a hint of cool metallic texture.
"This is the badge that represents my family and myself."
"So that means I can scare your people with this."
"Yes, but if you use it indiscriminately. I'll come back and punish you properly." Lance lowered his head and whispered in my ear. His raspy voice sent a tingle of electricity running through my body.
Our faces were so close that his hot, wet breath blew into my ears.
"You should give him a kiss." Artemis forces my eyes to Lance's full lips, and I subconsciously lick the corner of my mouth.
"Did you do that on purpose?" Lance picks up my chin and rubs his thumb over the corner of my licked mouth.
"I ......" I watched the green aura at the edge of Lance's pupils slowly dilate as he dropped a soft kiss on the corner of my mouth.
"If you say one more word, it'll be more than one kiss."
Lance took only a few elite fighters with him and I watched his car disappear at the end of the street. It felt as if we were really a couple. I clamped my hands over my face, what the hell was I thinking again?
Although you can't go out easily, it's comfortable to live here in Lance. From the movie theater to the gym, his villa is like a mini-mall. I can also order food from the chef. But a phone call from Nathan interrupted my good life.
"What did you say?" I inquired into the other end of the phone.
"Dad's been missing since martial law started." Nathan's tone was anxious.
"What does 'gone' mean?"
"The night of martial law, Dad said he was going out for a drink at night, and then he didn't come back."
"Damn it." I kept moving around the room.
"Should we notify the Alpha?"
"No way! Do you want Dad to be punished?" Let's not even mention that Lance wasn't in the pack right now. What if the Alpha knew that he was running around even though he was under martial law just to have a drink, then he wouldn't be able to get away with it.
The only sound coming from Nathan's side is the mechanical current of the phone, and he is the one who is most afraid of Lance. The last time he quit the drug, Nathan was scared by Lance. But it has its advantages, he is now no longer afraid to touch the drug casually.
"I'll find a way to get to him." My gaze goes to the back door where Lance used to sneak me out of here.
