ELLA’S POV
I stormed downstairs and found Marilyn and Jack in the living room watching TV when I stood in front of them so they couldn’t see the screen.
“Where is it?” I demanded.
“Where’s what?” Marilyn asked. Fake innocence plastered across her face.
“Where’s my money?” I demanded.
“Oh that? Yeah, I needed booze.” Jack said casually.
“You spent my savings on alcohol?” I asked.
“Well, yeah. It’s not cheap stuff.” He said, trying to look around me to see the TV.
I stood there staring at them as they were acting so nonchalantly about spending my savings. The money that I worked my ass off for, just to get the hell out of here and away from them which is what they wanted, and they didn’t even care. I felt myself getting angrier and angrier just looking at them.
I wasn’t sure what came over me, but I lunged at Jack while he was still sitting on the couch and I started punching him and kicking him in every place that I could reach.
Marilyn was trying to pull me back but she couldn’t get me off of him so she grabbed me by the hair and pulled me down to the ground.
“Who the hell do you think you are? Why are you hiding money from us? You live here for free.” Marilyn yelled.
“What the hell is free around here? I have to pay for my own food. I have to pay for my own clothes. Everything that you should buy me, I have to pay for myself.” I yelled, standing up.
“Bullshit. I know you’ve got more, now where is it? You get it for me, right now.” Marilyn demanded.
I was just about to yell back when Jack grabbed me by the throat and choked me into silence. I couldn’t talk as long as he was holding my throat.
“We know that you can get more money. Celie, that bitch of an old woman, isn’t sending any more money. But those twins that were just here. They seemed like they are pretty well off. I’m sure they would be willing to pay.” Jack said as he slowly released my neck.
“You’re insane.” I coughed out. I couldn’t believe he was going to try and force me to get money from the twins. What kind of asshole does that?
“You bring me a check by tomorrow, or I will personally see the twins myself to get money out of them.” Jack said.
I stood there in shock at his audacity. How the hell could he think that he could just extort money out of two people that he had only seen once on his doorstep.
How low will this son of a bitch sink.
I was lying in bed that night, not being able to sleep. Feeling like my whole world was collapsing in on me again. My mother was cold and distant and a complete bitch, my father could be who knows where and my stepfather was a drunken letch.
I could barely control my anger towards Jack right now. I wasn’t even a person to him. Not to either of them. I was a commodity for the twins.
As much as I didn’t want to admit it, I had feelings for them, and I didn’t want them to see me at my lowest. Like today. That was so humiliating. I couldn’t believe that they just showed up like that.
I hated being seen as a damsel in distress. It was bad enough that I was getting charity from some mystery donor that gave Celie money for me. The only reason I didn’t turn it down was because I knew that I would need it when I ran away.
Not that it mattered anymore. All my money was gone.
If the twins saw me as someone that needed saving all the time, then a relationship would never be possible. They would never see me as an equal. Only as someone that needed to be protected and hidden away.
I didn’t want that from a relationship.
“Hey Adam. Can I talk to you for a minute?” I asked.
“Sure. Come on in.” He said. So I walked into the office and I closed the door behind me.
“I’m really sorry to have to do this. But, I’ve kind of hit a bad patch at the moment. I was hoping I could get an advance on my pay.” I said.
“Oh. Jeez, I’d love to help you Ella. But, it’s just not possible. There’s not enough profit at the moment. Business has been a little slow lately.” He said.
“I’m not asking for much. Just a little.” I said.
“I know. And I wish I could help you. But I just can’t.” He said with sorrow in his eyes. I did know that he wanted to help.
“It’s alright. I’m sure I’ll work something out.” I said.
“Alright.” He said.
So I left his office and I got started with work. I was waiting on my usual tables and the smell of the food was starting to get to me.
I was serving the tables that were there and when someone came in and as I was taking a couple of meals to a table I turned around to head back to the counter when everything started to go dark. I felt really dizzy and I needed to grab a hold of the chair that was next to me, but that didn’t help.
Adam’s voice was muffled as he tried to speak to me and when I tried to look up at him, it was useless.
I lost consciousness and fell to the ground.
I suddenly got a smell of a familiar scent around me as I felt someone pick me up off the floor and carry me out of there with the familiar ding of the bell.
