Alec tilts his head, voice calm but certain. “Then try it.”
I blink. “On who?”
His lips curve into a daring smile. “On me.”
I freeze, my eyes widening. “On you? Absolutely not.”
“Yes,” he counters easily without hesitation, folding his arms.
“Alec, I’m not going to practice forcing my will on you. That’s—”
“—exactly what you’ll have to do if you want to master it,” he interrupts. “Better me than someone else.”
“No, Alec, I could—”
“You won’t hurt me.” His tone is a quiet steel. “You can’t run from this part of your power. If you want to control it, you have to use it.”
I hesitated, chewing my lip. “I don’t know if I can even—”
“Then prove it me and yourself, Sadie… You can do it,” he challenges softly, eyes gleaming.
Something about the way he said it. The conviction behind his words. It unravels my resistance. Slowly, I nodded.
I straighten, drawing in a breath, I meet his gaze. His eyes are steady, unwavering.
“Come closer,” I command.
Nothing happens.
One of his brows lifted, the corner of his mouth twitching. “You’ll have to mean it, Sadie.”
I narrow my eyes, letting the energy pour into my words and letting more power thread into my voice.
“Come closer.”
Something shifts in his eyes, his back becomes ramrod and his eyes glaze over just a little bit. Like he’s under a spell.
This time he obeys; his body moves toward me, step after step until he is only inches away. My pulse hammers, heart racing as the realization that my command worked hits me.
I can’t believe I just commanded an Alpha and he obeyed as if he were an omega.
His heat seeps into me; his scent, cedar and smoke, wraps around me.
I need something different, but when I open my mouth to give another command, the words that spill out aren’t the ones I’d planned.
“Kiss me.”
The air around us freezes as the command rings through it.
“That’s because I wasn’t.”
The air between us thickens. My lips part, but no words come out. He hadn’t fought it. He hadn’t wanted to.
The world tilts. Even though he just hinted, I still need confirmation.
“You…” My voice cracked. “You wanted to.”
His eyes don't flinch. “I’ve wanted to for longer than you realize.”
My chest tightens, every defense I’d built rattling. “Alec—”
He steps even closer, voice dropping low, intimate. “If you want me to kiss you, Sadie, you don’t need mind control. All you have to do is ask.”
Logic screams for me to walk away, but I can’t. Not when the truth of what I want screams louder than those of logic.
Before I can think too much. Before fear or shame can stop me, the words slip past my lips.
“Kiss me.”
This time, there is no power in the words. No command. Just me.
For a moment, Alec’s eyes burn into me with surprise. Then the smirk fades, replaced by something deeper and heavier... and then he doesn’t waste another breath.
