Paul asked, “How do we get to the village?” 

“I’ve already arranged for a pickup truck,” Sam said. “Only trucks can navigate the village roads.” 

“How long do we have to wait?” 

Sam looked at his watch. “About… half an hour. 

“Alright.” 

After sending her messages, Miranda put her phone away. She turned and met Joli’s urgent gaze. “Let’s go. I’ve already arranged for a ride. He’s waiting for us at the entrance of the village.” 

As it happened, Micah had initially been reluctant to agree last night, but he suddenly changed his mind at dawn this morning. He said someone had offered him a large sum to pick up two people from town, and he had to leave immediately to get that as soon as possible. 

Rather than make the trip empty, he figured he might as well bring Miranda and the others along so that he could make money on both trips.

Joli fell silent for a minute before saying, “Listen to me, you guys can’t stay here! It’s too dangerous! Kenny and Shawn are both mad dogs! They’ll bite anyone when they go crazy. You guys-” 

Miranda interrupted him, “Joli.” 

“What?”

He stayed silent. Miranda pressed, “Are we or aren’t we?”

Joli’s face contorted with pain. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry… I shouldn’t have dragged you guys into this. I’m really very sorry…” 

Madison sighed softly. “You have to trust us. Isn’t it better if we face this together and look out for each other instead of you dealing with it alone? Besides, your mother’s health is deteriorating. You need to leave the village as soon as possible and take her to a big hospital for a proper examination. 

“If the Sneiders keep holding you in the village, her condition will only worsen with time. And you will face reprimands or expulsion by the college for being absent too long. Is that the outcome you wish to see?” 

Joli’s body stiffened. In the end, he slumped weakly against a pile of firewood in the corner. 

Miranda turned and walked back into the house, stretching lazily as she went. “It’s still dark. I’m going back to catch some sleep.” 

After all, they had a tough battle ahead. 

Madison followed after her. “I’m going too!” 

Her hands and feet were freezing after standing at the entrance for just a short while. Only the warmth of a bed could save her.
