[Congratulations! You have now awakened the Healer Profession!]
Jane, who had barely left her new son’s bed, gasped. She was not sure how to use her ability, but she heard that having a healer would greatly increase the speed of recovery!
She pulled the bell for the staff members to approach (as per instruction), and she patiently waited beside her son. She held his hand, and she physically felt his temperature go down bit by bit.
Soon, the staff members appeared, and they were shocked to see that she had awakened as a healer! Didn’t she literally just upgrade to level 10?
It seemed like a mother’s love really knows no bounds.
The staff called on the healer on duty to teach Jane how to use her abilities. They also asked her to serve as a healer after her son recovered, which was an additional incentive for the staff to prioritize the boy.
A few hours later, the boy’s long eyelashes fluttered open. His voice was raspy, his throat excessively dry. "Mother?"
Jane, who had been using her abilities—and she was improving rapidly since she had not stopped using them since she learned to use them—flinched at the sound of his voice.
She gasped, and the tears she had been holding back finally flowed down. "Oh, child ..." she said, embracing him. "Welcome back."
...
Not everyone received a blessing like this, however. Some people had arrived too late in Alterra, and the inhibitors did not reach them before they reached the stage, and since they were visitors, they weren’t the priority for the cure.
The longer they were ill, the longer the effects would stay. If the others had trouble controlling aether, then these people, on top of that, would likely lose some appendages.
For example, there were aborigines who headed out immediately after getting sick, because they knew their village was helpless against it.
Many aboriginal associate villages were like this, especially when they were not too far from Alterra. They would likely gamble and head there than stay in their village that had been completely helpless during the previous plague.
The Lord and elders didn’t know how to handle the ill without killing them, so the territory never stopped them from leaving, letting them go on their own. In fact, many of them were thankful to get rid of the ill without having to fight their own conscience.
The ill had carts they pulled themselves, some of which had the bedridden comrades.
Even when the leaders were struggling, they had no choice but to grit their teeth and keep going. They lost many along the way, eventually finding Alterra and got quarantined.
If there was any bright side to struggling to head here, even if they didn’t actually get healed, it was that even if they died, they at least had a roof over their heads and food on their stomachs.
Soon, the territory called for a hundred volunteers to test out the cure. Except for the guards (not many were affected), some volunteering citizens, and people who received a slot due to a contributing relative, the rest of the slots were chosen by draw lots.
The afflicted (or their relatives) who were willing to take a risk just had to submit the name of the ill, and if they were picked, then they could be the first users of the cure.
The leader for this party happened to be chosen, thanks to many people placing his name in.
He had unfortunately lost his control of aether, and also lost an arm and a leg. He was not an elementalist, but he was a swordsman. So he felt guilty, thinking that the cure was wasted on him.
"Don’t worry too much," the nurse said. "Even without those things, you can still function."
"In Alterra, everyone who is willing to work should be able to live with dignity."
The man’s eyes heated up. If it were anywhere else, he might as well be thrown out the walls.
"Thank you..."
...
With the cooperation of various entities, more and more batches of the cure were formulated. Those with the partner Cities have also created batches of it in parallel.
Within a week of the first batch’s distribution, the disease was controlled in the main source territories, with some leaking to the nearby associated territories.
