After a few weeks, more housing became available to move into. Like this, many long-term dormers—who had been working hard the past several months—could finally rent or own their own units!
There were many permanent residents who spent everything on buying a residency, so they lived in the dorms to save money and also to save up for downpayment.
Sadly, when they finally got a bit of money (or had enough credit to make a decent loan), there were no more units available for purchase!
Now that there was massive construction done, these people finally got their wish to own their own homes. It was inevitable; humans wanted to have their own homes to truly feel stable!
Many of those with their own homes also bought a new unit. Since citizens could only own up to two properties initially (they could get the right to buy more by spending exponentially larger amounts of contribution points), many of them bought from the new buildings, opening them up for rent.
After the success of the first few ’landlords,’ the trend only picked up pace, and more and more people wanted to just lie down and collect rent (while ticking their hunting requirements, of course).
This was also why the new limits reduced the original maximum of three properties to two, though there were still plenty who could take advantage of the loopholes, using their relatives to buy more as long as they had the money for it (*cough* Baron *cough*).
Anyway, this meant that there were a lot more dormitory beds freed up for rent, and they were also swept up by newcomers who had been waiting for them.
Even before the upgrade, many, specifically from associate territories and villages, had left their old homes to move to Alterra. It was just that there was barely any accommodation left for a long-term stay. Staying in the inn for an extended period was not cheap!
Speaking of dorms, there were also new dormitory buildings in the outer walls, located near the dense mid-rise area and not too far from one of the new middle class mall-to-be.
Of course, real estate in Alterra was still not cheap, so most of the upgraders were cohabitating or had only paid off down payment.
Still, the terms of payment were very good, so any permanent resident who worked hard would always have a good chance of owning their own property. It was only an issue of time.
A lot of people were moving into the dormitory today, and a lot of them were relatives of staff and personnel, but did not have space in their own homes (or did not want to share their spaces).
For example, Thorance’s family.
Thorance got them to Alterra to get treated for their addiction before. He hired some mercenaries to escort them, which unfortunately led them to believe they’d be treated specially.
They were naturally amazed by Alterra and its sights, and they wondered if they would move here.
However, he told them that if they wanted to move here, he’d only support them for a month. He told them the cost of living here was low, and they only had to do basic jobs to live a decent life.
He also informed them he’d help them get light jobs, but only once, in case they were careless and didn’t do their jobs properly, ruining his own reputation in the process.
Thorance had learned not to blindly sacrifice anymore. Even if they were addicted and weren’t completely in their right minds, he still felt extremely taken advantage of.
They always did have a tendency to take him for granted, even when they were completely sober, and Thorance—who had learned the meaning of self-respect in Alterra—naturally could not allow himself to be treated like that.
Unsurprisingly, they called him ungrateful and told him that he shouldn’t have brought them here in the first place if he wasn’t willing to support them.
In fact, he bought a small unit for them to live in, but after that outburst, he decided to just rent it out to strangers.
Seeing how it was with him, his friends and companions couldn’t help but pity him. The ’original NPCs’ would meet up once a month to catch up, so Betty was here.
She was thankful didn’t contact her family and consulted her husband first. He told her that some people were just meant to be cut off.
Before, she had been convinced that blood was everything. That she was worthless without it, but Tom...he made her feel that she was fine even as herself, and she loved him more for it.
Besides... she paused, touching her stomach. They were doing their best to create their own family. Although it would take a while for her to conceive, if at all, she realized that she shouldn’t call on anyone who could risk endangering that happiness.
The family she had here was already more than enough.
...
There were also plenty of move-ins to the midrise condo units. For example, Gauis’s son and in-laws.
To be honest, she was really worried. At least when her husband was handling a caravan, they had a team of mercenaries partnered with them to guard.
Sadly, after he was betrayed for a few bags of powder, her husband had to go back to hunting again.
But...now...she realized it could’ve been a blessing in disguise.
"You should go try the park dedicated to residents here," Gaius said. "There’s a playground for the kids."
"YAY!" the girl said, leaping to the door. Woody looked exasperated, but he went out anyway. He was also curious for sure.
This left the father and son in the room.
Raul looked at his father with a complicated expression. He was happy that they were all going to live well, but he also felt bad for doubting him, even thinking he had gone senile.
Gaius didn’t know what he thought, but even if he did, he wouldn’t have minded. The old man just patted his son’s shoulder. "Good to have you here."
"I was cynical at first. There’s no way you would be so obsessed with a place, I thought. Now I understand," he said, looking out the window again. "Such a powerful place, will it be alright?"
"And...wouldn’t what happened before happen again?"
They looked at each other, and Gaius knew he was referring to that incident that got him kicked out of the previous Town, and was even blacklisted and limited to only selecting villages to get hired in.
He got kicked out because, while gardening, he overheard things he shouldn’t have. He was under oath, so he couldn’t say anything, but it was basically about Hassen City’s collection of metals.
They were also hunting for dwarves. What he overheard was a conversation about transferring a small group they captured.
Gaius wondered if there was a way to mention it to Lord Althea somehow.
