Back in Bleulle, a massive investigation had commenced. Too many things were happening and the entire City was buzzing.
First, a major attack happened in the inner circle. This was a very, very big deal.
The Inner Circle!
Although there were no deaths—not even serious injuries except those continuously pushed and stepped on during the stampede—the prestige of the place was still compromised.
The Inner Circle relied on its safety from all threats to create a certain esteem and premium into it. It became the goal of all noble families, and something commoners would discuss with awe and longing.
A good part of it was due to the Aether Barrier that would be activated if serious exterior threats dawned on them, particularly during wars or major beast mobs. By extension, even if it wasn’t activated—and it hadn’t been activated for a while now—the pride of living within its scope was still there, and many were willing to kill for it.
The most important buildings—the Center, the Warehouse, et cetera—were also within this area, ensuring that should a lock down happen, those within the circle would receive the best of the best, without losing most of the luxuries and comforts they were used to.
That said, although all these were still valid, the Inner Circle’s position of being the absolute safe haven—a position which various families would fight for—was suddenly lower. Bleumrick was finding that very hard to accept.
Bleulle was not a weak City at all, but most of their forces were naturally along the outer walls, guarding the battlements and keeping order in those areas. Monsters in Cities were not weak, after all, and it was an incredibly precarious job that no noble family—except the Golds—wanted their children to be a part of.
It was why all the noble children who became guards were mostly assigned within the inner circle, and each family’s forces were also mostly limited in the area. This was their complacency, and until now it hadn’t caused them any trouble.
Now...look at this.
Further, the Sephon family’s forces had been weakened due to the earlier expedition and their business for the wedding, making them particularly susceptible to the unexpected attack.
The other families’ guard teams definitely did not bother to help. Rather, those people would’ve enjoyed such a good show, regardless of whether or not they attended the wedding.
Bleumrick understood he should be adding a stricter leader in the inner walls from now on. The ones assigned there didn’t rotate so they had been designated in the inner circle for years.
Before this, no one dared to make trouble in the inner circle. In many cases, because nothing was happening, many of the guards would use their time doing rounds having fun. Some would go home and stay there for hours. This was actually common practice.
Bleumrick ddin’t really care about it because he believed no one would dare make trouble! He also didn’t like it when nobles got too strong anyway, so balancing them with some incompetence—at the time—was something he even subtly encouraged.
This had to be changed, and he’d be forced to assign outer guards in the inner circle as well, and vice versa.
It was just that very few noble children had parents that’d allow them to be assigned along the perimeters unless they were illegitimate. It was very difficult to conceive at some point, and most people only had a few children to spare.
Similarly, the nobles and him would dislike commonborn guards roaming around the inner walls as well. Many would think they were dirtying the streets, so to speak.
So the best hires would be nobles, but also great and experienced fighters who were willing to get their hands dirty and jump straight to the battlefield.
There was no way that a lesser territory would be able to cause Bleulle—especially the inner circle—this much trouble!
