Where words travel freely, so too does fortune find its way.
As a mercenary, he might have a rough idea about what this meant by instinct. However, it was only in Alterra that he truly understood.
Considering the current trend, Alterra would only become more and more well-known, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’d see people several thousands of kilometers away heading here just to see it. The Post Office would be instrumental to this development.
Another interesting difference in the Post Office in Alterra was its Alert System. For a couple of silver for foreigners (and one for locals) they could activate this add-on.
When a letter in their name appeared, a Letterboy (or girl) would hunt for them, alerting them that they had a letter in the Post Office. This would save the waiting time, and they could use that time to go around, have fun, learn more, and maybe earn more.
That said, Bart and the others used this service a lot, because they exchanged a lot of letters back home as well as with their allies. Regardless of whether something big had happened, it was their duty to report information back to the main base.
Mercenaries traveled a lot, and they lived on the edge. Their lives could be forfeited due to the lack of information.
They were relatively well informed, and their own Mercenary team had established a system of passing information around. They were also written in code.
It wasn’t that they did not trust Alterra—on the contrary, they did—but their internal code was a system that their mercenary group applied to every member.
After all, through various methods and generations of existence, they naturally knew of the Lords’ access to the Posts.
Their Mercenary team, the Rolan Mercenary Team, had devised their own code, which had been perfected through the years. It was still using the same language, but certain seemingly innocuous words actually meant something else.
As a leader of a team, Bart was also updated with news from elsewhere. The news was centered in their region for the most part, which was far West from here, though.
For example, Voumi seemed to have some tensions with Valov Town.
For some reason, visitors from Valov were found dead, and all signs pointed to Hesso, the unofficial heir. The two towns had little to do with their Twinwave Town, but they were also not too far either. Everyone nearby was asked to monitor the changes.
Other news included which territory went to war with whom in their area, which one fell, what were the priority missions, if there were strong monster sightings, et cetera.
For a mercenary team in a Town, Rolan Mercenary’s information network is among the top in their tier.
There were also a few lookout alerts.
For example, there seemed to have been Dwarves spotted somewhere in the region...
In fact, based on their descriptions, neither was Bart. While the weapons were powerful, it was inconsistent with what he knew they could make. He hadn’t seen it himself but, according to his old bosses who had the fortune of seeing a successful dwarven weapon, it was an inferior product.
Ahem
Finally, there was news that involved Hassen City.
It was news of the Hassen heir getting married. Hassen City was the nearest city to Twinwave Town. However, contrary to popular belief, it was not the City they had the most information in. The administration there was famously strict, and it was difficult to gather news that they did not want outsiders to know.
Anyway, apparently the Hassen City heir was marrying the only daughter of the Bleuelle City Lord—which was quite far away from each other, even if they were technically the nearest City to each other. After all, there were only a few cities in this world and traveling between them could take months, if not several weeks.
This was why inter-city marriages were not as common as one would think, simply because their regions were so isolated from each other that it was more practical to marry with nobles holding territories and industries nearby.
However, it was said that Hassen and Bleulle were connected by a teleportation array, which narrowed down this gap. It was just that only high nobles had access to this so it took a bit to actually confirm this news from their mercenary team’s perspective. In any case, this was very big news indeed.
In theory, this probably meant more trade between the two territories as well as an alliance in case of an attack. It had been a while since either territory had been in a war, nearly a few years for each, and it was estimated it would take a while for the next ones to come.
That said... he couldn’t help but remember that the Bleulle princess was thought to be the fiance of Orion himself! However, that didn’t materialize because he married someone else. Bleulle was so far from Twinwave, though it was such a big scandal that even they had heard of it.
He couldn’t help but think about Orion’s wife. She was quite pretty, but nothing so special that he’d choose her over Lady Octavia.
Bart couldn’t help but be a little curious. What would a man like Orion see in such a typical woman?
