“Ethan, do you hate me now? Do you really think your divorce from Isabella is all my fault?”
Natalie’s eyes were already filling up, tears shimmering and ready to spill over.
Jeremy gave Ethan a meaningful look from across the room.
Ethan shot him a glare.
“Natalie, I’m not lying. My uric acid levels are actually high. I have to watch what I eat and I can’t keep drinking those rich soups.”
“My divorce from Isabella was my own doing. It has nothing to do with you.”
He was the one who had fallen for Natalie in the first place. This was on him.
“You said you married Isabella because of me. Even after you two got married, you still treated me so well. So of course I think your divorce is partly because of me. I know it is. Now you regret it, so you blame me. You hate me, don’t you?”
“You haven’t treated me the same for a while now, Ethan. It hurts. Does our friendship, after all these decades, really mean less than your half-year marriage to Isabella?”
Natalie’s voice cracked as the tears finally fell. “Ever since you and Isabella split up, you’ve just gotten colder and colder toward me. You’re punishing me, aren’t you?”
Ethan didn’t say a word.
“I’ll talk to Isabella for you. I’ll tell her you want her back, okay? Ethan, can’t we just go back to how things were? I can’t take you acting like this. I just can’t.”
“Natalie.”
Ethan stood up abruptly, his voice steady but final.
“Yes, I’ve changed. I used to love you, but I don’t want to anymore. You’re Jordan’s wife now. I can’t love you, so I’m done trying.”
