“Natalie got drunk last night and still hasn’t woken up.”
The butler led Elton into the house. “Jordan’s already at the office. Jackson and Deborah are both here. Elton, just be careful what you say in front of them. Jackson treats Deborah really well. Oh, and Kevin starts summer break today too.”
Elton frowned but didn’t say anything.
He followed the butler through the entryway. Sure enough, he spotted Jackson and Deborah, along with a ten-year-old boy—Jackson’s illegitimate son. Father and son were playing chess at the coffee table.
Kevin might have only been ten, but Deborah spared no effort or expense when it came to his upbringing. If Kevin showed even a hint of interest in something, she’d sign him up for lessons. If he didn’t want to learn, she’d make him anyway. Music, chess, calligraphy, painting—Kevin was good at everything. He always had the best grades in school, too. Because of this, Jackson started to see Kevin as even more promising than Jordan and shifted his attention to him.
As soon as Elton and the butler stepped inside, the little family looked up at them.
Deborah recognized Elton right away. She’d been with Jackson for years and knew all the Lane family relatives by heart.
“Jackson,” Elton said.
He tried to smile, but as soon as he moved his face, pain shot through his jaw. He winced, abandoning the attempt.
Jackson frowned. “Elton, what happened to you? Did you get into another fight? Was it over a woman again?” He knew exactly what kind of guy Elton was.
Jackson honestly looked down on people like him. Elton didn’t have any real skills. He just relied on his family’s money, partied nonstop, and chased after women everywhere he went. He was even more of a mess than Jackson had ever been. No wonder he’d just gotten divorced. What woman could put up with a husband like that?
“Jackson, I didn’t get into a fight. Someone beat me up.”
