The Mercedes sat smack in the middle of the road, parked like it owned the place.
Isabella pressed the horn a few times, her patience already wearing thin. At last, the driver moved. A man stepped out. He looked sort of familiar, walking right up to her car with a swagger.
He knocked on Isabella’s window and motioned for her to get out.
Isabella rolled the window down, forcing herself to stay calm. “Can I help you?”
He stared at her, all wide-eyed, like she’d just committed some huge offense. “Isabella, you don’t remember me?”
She gave him another once-over. The face rang a bell, but she couldn’t place it. “Sorry, who are you?”
“It’s Elton! We’ve met. You really don’t remember? I’m Natalie’s cousin!”
Oh. That’s right. Natalie’s cousin. That explained a lot. Isabella remembered Natalie mentioning to him that she was single again, probably egging him on to pursue her before anyone else could.
The first time Elton met Isabella, he’d been obvious in his interest. He never could resist a beautiful woman, and Isabella was exactly his type. The way he looked at her, it was clear he’d been hoping to get her alone from the very start.
Natalie’s cousin. Now Isabella remembered. Before Ethan had ever pursued her, Elton had tried hanging around, pestering her for a while. Once Ethan was openly courting her, Elton had faded into the background. Now, after more than half a year, here he was again. No doubt Natalie was behind this.
Natalie just couldn’t stand to see her happy. Even after her divorce from Ethan, Natalie was still meddling.
“Elton, what do you want?”
