Natalie couldn’t help but laugh at his words. She slipped her arm through Ethan’s, leaning in as if she might rest her head against him, but Ethan pulled away so fast it was almost awkward.
“Natalie, don’t do that. If Jordan sees, he’ll get the wrong idea.”
She looked at him, all innocence. “But we always used to be like this.”
“That was before,” Ethan said quietly. “Back then, you and Jordan weren’t married, and neither was I. A little affection didn’t mean anything. Things are different now. We’re both married. If we act like this, people will get the wrong idea. Jordan wouldn’t like it, and Isabella… she wouldn’t be happy either.”
Inside, Isabella would have rolled her eyes. Honestly, she’d be delighted if the two of them took things all the way. It’d make her divorce so much easier.
Natalie’s smile faded. “You’re right. We’re both married now. We can’t go back to how things were. We really were so happy back then.”
Before Jordan ever confessed to her, Natalie had been the center of their world. Whatever she wanted, both men tried to give it to her. No one dared cross her. Every woman in Cabinda envied her.
When Jordan finally confessed his feelings, Natalie hadn’t said yes right away. She was waiting for Ethan to say something first. She knew he loved her too. She thought he’d confess, but he never did. She waited and waited. Eventually, she said yes to Jordan.
As time went on, Natalie never regretted choosing Jordan. They belonged together in a way she and Ethan never could. But Ethan’s status and all the benefits of staying close to him made her hesitant to let go. Jordan knew it too. Every time he negotiated with The Adams Group, he’d mention her, say he wanted to earn more so he could give her a better life.
Ethan loved her, and just wanted Jordan to treat her well. That’s why their families kept doing business together.
Natalie always hoped it would stay like this. The man she loved was her husband. The man who loved her was still her guardian angel.
He left in a hurry.
Natalie watched him go, her face growing darker by the second. He was practically running from her. Did he really not want to be alone with her anymore? Before, whenever they were alone, he opened up to her completely. His eyes had always been so warm, so full of feeling. She was always the one who left first, and he watched her go with longing in his eyes.
Now he acted like she was someone to avoid.
She stood there, frozen, watching until Ethan’s car disappeared and the butler closed the gate behind him. Only then did she turn and head back inside.
Jordan wasn’t downstairs anymore. She climbed the stairs and went into their bedroom. Jordan stepped out of the bathroom, freshly showered and changed, his face clean-shaven and his usual confidence back.
