Jennifer and Walter rushed over to the doctor, worry written all over their faces. They were terrified he’d tell them Ethan’s situation was hopeless.
The doctor hesitated for a second, then spoke up. “Mr. Adams’s problem is psychological.”
Ethan hadn’t let him run any tests. He’d just admitted that he didn’t truly love the woman he married, so they’d never actually been a real couple. He asked the doctor to keep this secret from his parents.
Left with no other option, the doctor agreed. Honestly, it was true—Ethan’s issue was all in his head.
Jennifer and Walter looked at each other, completely lost. Psychological? When had Ethan ever been so hurt that it changed him like this?
“Doctor, what are we supposed to do?” Jennifer asked, her voice shaky.
The doctor thought for a moment. “When he meets someone who actually sparks something in him, he’ll be fine. It’ll just happen on its own.”
Jennifer was at a loss for words.
Walter shook his head. “But Ethan treats his wife so well. He chased after her for months before she finally said yes. Why would he have a mental block with her?”
The doctor didn’t look convinced. “Walter, sometimes things aren’t what they seem. Anyway, Ethan is perfectly healthy. You’re his parents. Maybe you should talk to him yourselves.” He glanced at his watch. “It’s late. I should get going.”
Ethan paused. “It’s nothing urgent. Isabella’s short series drops tomorrow. Keep an eye on it for me, will you? If it’s tanking, help her out a bit. Don’t let her flop, but don’t go overboard either. If you make her too popular, she’ll start thinking she doesn’t need anyone.”
He didn’t want Isabella to fail, but he didn’t want her to get too successful, either. He was scared that if she made enough money, she’d leave him. She’d never stopped talking about divorce.
Now he finally understood why she was working so hard, why she was hustling to build her business. She was trying to make enough to be free from him, then she’d walk away. Sure, he’d never agree to the divorce. Even if she took him to court, he had enough connections to make sure she lost. Still, the way she kept bringing it up really got under his skin.
He knew he’d used her when they got married. But lately, he’d started to actually care about her. He’d kissed her, held her. She was the first woman he’d ever gotten close to. He wasn’t about to let her go.
If she wanted a divorce, she’d have to wait for him to die.
