Ever since their bitter divorce, the senior members of the Adams family had felt a deep sense of guilt toward Isabella. They treated her with profound respect now, and instead of interfering with Ethan's desperate attempts to win her back, they silently rooted for him.
"If York really is behind this," Isabella said, her voice dropping, "do you honestly think he'll spare you and your family?"
"His vendetta is against you, Natalie, and Jordan. I'm just the catalyst. He won't let any of you off the hook. The Adams family is a titan. He knows he can't take you down in a direct fight, especially if you ally with the Carters and the Masons. That's exactly why he's trying to sever my ties with them."
Thinking of the Masons, Isabella made a mental note to warn Laura and Jesse to triple their security.
"It's all speculation right now. We need hard evidence," Isabella sighed.
"My brothers are tearing the city apart looking for proof. We'll find something," Ethan promised. "If York flaunts himself at the upcoming galas, it'll essentially confirm your theory."
Ethan ran a hand through his hair. "I just don't understand how York could have the exact same memories of the past life that we do."
If York didn't possess those memories, he never would have shown up in Cabinda two years ahead of schedule.
Isabella stayed silent. She didn't have the answers either.
"Isabella," Ethan said softly. "If Harold buckles under the pressure and breaks up with you... what will you do?"
"If he wants to leave, I'll let him," Isabella replied calmly. "I won't beg him to stay. If being with me puts his family in a body bag, I couldn't live with the guilt. I would never blame him for walking away. I refuse to drag innocent people down with me."
"I'll make up for all my mistakes," Ethan vowed, his voice raw.
Isabella turned her face away. "Ethan, we are friends. That is all we will ever be."
Natalie was still breathing.
In this life, Natalie hadn't even let Isabella go after the divorce. If Isabella were to rekindle things with Ethan, Natalie would unleash absolute hell.
Though, with Natalie currently sitting in a police interrogation room, she was likely heading to prison. But unless they could prove she was the mastermind, she'd be out in a few years—ready to obsess over Ethan and seek bloody vengeance on Isabella all over again.
