She walked over to him, forcing a strained smile. "What instructions do you have for me, Mr. Austin? A phone call would have sufficed. Whatever you need, I will do my utmost to get it done."
There was absolutely no reason to drag her all the way here while she was still recovering from her miscarriage.
"Sit."
York still didn't look up from his paper as he offered her a seat.
"You're still weak. Standing for too long isn't good for you."
The unexpected sliver of consideration almost left her feeling flattered.
She was, after all, a wealthy heiress in her own right.
"Thank you."
She cursed him in her head, but outwardly played the part of the gracious guest as she sank into a single armchair.
"Drink?"
"No, thank you. I'm not thirsty."
Having been drugged once before, Natalie wouldn't dare touch anything York handed her. The fear of being manipulated again kept her paralyzed.
"Afraid I spiked it?"
"No, I'm genuinely not thirsty. Mr. Austin, why did you call me here?"
Natalie watched him intently as she asked.
The man was blatantly disrespecting her, having kept his eyes glued to his newspaper since she walked in.
"Ethan had a massive accident. He nearly died. I assume you haven't heard?"
"What! Ethan was in an accident? I thought he was on a business trip! I had no idea. I asked Isabella, but she didn't tell me anything, and the Adams Group kept their mouths shut. I thought he was just out of town."
"In fact, on the day of your father-in-law's wedding, Isabella and Harold visited him again."
"Isabella. It's always Isabella! Was I her mortal enemy in a past life? She lives just to sabotage me and steal everything that's mine!"
Natalie hissed, her voice dripping with venom.
York thought to himself, *You actually were enemies in your past life. You were just incredibly lucky back then because Ethan and Jordan always took your side.*
*But in the end, you wound up just as dead as I did.*
"Natalie, haven't you ever considered eliminating Isabella? As long as she's breathing, she's going to keep taking what belongs to you. Your husband, your childhood friend, your social standing—she'll take it all."
"Have you noticed Jordan's attitude toward her shifting? They played siblings for twenty years; there's bound to be some lingering attachment."
"If Isabella stays alive, your husband will inevitably lean toward her. And Ethan? He's already completely captivated."
"The only way you'll ever find peace and maintain your luxurious lifestyle is if Isabella is permanently removed from the picture."
