“What’s the matter? Can’t I even ask? I’m just worried about you.”
Natalie fired back at Ethan, “What, you think I’m up to something? Just because I asked if you and Isabella really got divorced?”
“Natalie, how did my mom really die? Was it really suicide? Did she jump off the building?”
Ethan didn’t answer her question. He just stared at her and kept pushing.
Natalie let out a quiet sigh. “Yes, she did. I already told you what happened that day. I was on the roof burning some of Isabella’s things. Cynthia must have smelled the smoke and came up to check.”
Burning things always leaves a strong odor in the air. Anyone would notice.
“She found me up there and asked what I was burning and why. I knew I couldn’t hide it anymore, so I told her the truth.”
“When she heard Isabella was killed by those kidnappers, she just collapsed on the ground, crying her heart out. She was absolutely crushed.”
“I sat with her and tried everything to comfort her.”
“She kept calling out Isabella’s name, crying and shouting. Eventually, she told me to leave. She said she wanted some time alone on the roof.”
“So I left. I’d just reached the door when I couldn’t help looking back. I saw her stumbling to the railing. She climbed up, looked lost, and said, ‘Isabella, Mom’s coming to you. Wait for me.’ Then she jumped.”
“I ran as fast as I could to grab her, but it was too late. I couldn’t even touch her. I was so scared, my legs went numb. My hands shook as I tried to call an ambulance.”
“The paramedics arrived and took Cynthia away. You got there just as they were leaving with her. I told you to go straight to the hospital and meet us there. But by the time we arrived, you said Cynthia didn’t make it.”
After finishing, Natalie looked at Ethan and asked quietly, “Ethan, why are you suddenly asking about this? Has someone been talking to you?”
