Fairfax needed to speak with Starla.
Starla had things to say to him as well, but seeing his grim expression, she stepped out of the room to talk.
For Darleen, this was the darkest day of her life.
Six days ago, she had been riding high on a massive wave of hope.
Now, that hope had been violently ripped away and smashed into pieces.
Xenia hurried over. "Mom, Fairfax is back. Is he finally going to give Yelchin Group to Starla?"
Just moments before Darleen confronted Starla, Harley and Annika had called again, screaming and cursing. Based on their frantic tone, they were completely broken by the external pressure.
They were ready to surrender the entire Yelchin Group to Starla if it meant the nightmare would stop.
Yelchin Group...
Such a massive empire, the pride of their family, was about to change its surname.
It was the ultimate humiliation.
Hearing Xenia's question, Darleen closed her eyes, her entire body trembling with a mix of fury and shame.
"He probably will. In the end... I really am the one who destroyed this family."
She had exhausted every possible option. There was no way out.
Darleen looked like a walking corpse. In that moment, the fight drained out of her completely. She looked as lifeless and defeated as Brinley.
"Mom, what are you doing?"
Xenia panicked as Darleen silently lay down on her bed.
Without Mrs. Shipley to eliminate Starla, their only option for survival was to grovel and work under her roof.
The only way they earned their keep was by doing chores.
For days, they had been trapped in a cycle of breaking down, picking themselves back up, breaking down again, and forcing themselves to keep going.
But now, Darleen couldn't take it anymore. She was completely broken.
"We still have so many chores left!" Xenia pleaded.
Darleen didn't answer. She just kept her eyes shut.
From the corner, Brinley let out a low, raspy laugh. "Heh... where did all that confidence go? What happened? Couldn't handle Starla after all?"
"Shut your mouth!" Xenia snapped, glaring venomously at her.
They demanded she stop Fairfax.
Fairfax was attacking the Fowler Group like a rabid dog. Everything the Fowlers had painstakingly built in Marina City was being systematically dismantled.
Harriet was practically living on the streets in Yoran Country.
The calls were relentless.
Brinley dragged herself outside to answer. "Hello."
She hadn't eaten a proper meal in days. Sally only tossed her meager scraps to keep her alive.
She barely had the strength to hold the phone.
Felix's furious roar tore through the speaker. "Why is Fairfax still attacking my company?! Did you even talk to him?!"
"Felix... I was so incredibly blind when it came to you."
"What did you just say?"
"Why did I ever get involved with a piece of trash like you? I threw away a good man like Faraday for this? You manipulated me, you used me, and now that everything has blown up, you expect me to clean up your mess?"
In the past, Felix yelling at her would have broken her heart.
