No wife could tolerate another woman brazenly stealing her husband.
Hearing Darleen's sudden burst of confidence, Annika paused, her anger momentarily replaced by desperate curiosity. "What are you talking about?"
"Starla's backing doesn't come from Herbert Farley," Darleen revealed, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "It comes from Kael Shipley!"
"Kael Shipley?"
Annika certainly knew the name. Kael held an incredibly high-status position within the Hoggart Group. He was a titan in his own right.
"Yes!" Darleen confirmed eagerly. "And we have already established contact with his wife."
"Are you saying... Mrs. Shipley is going to handle Starla for us?"
"Exactly," Darleen practically purred, unable to hide the malicious delight in her voice. Did they really think a cheap little tramp like Starla was untouchable? Darleen refused to believe it.
On the other end of the line, Annika processed the information. "So... we don't have to give her Yelchin Group?"
The decision to surrender the company had been agonizing. Handing over generations of blood, sweat, and legacy to a single woman felt like amputating a limb. Hearing that there might be a way out instantly reignited a spark of hope in the old woman's chest.
"Of course we're not giving it to her! What right does she have to our company?!" Darleen scoffed.
"She has no right," Annika agreed softly. But that hadn't stopped Starla from aggressively holding them hostage for it.
"Are you absolutely certain this will work?" Annika asked, her skepticism returning.
She knew Darleen could be vicious. During the years Starla was married to Fairfax, Darleen was the primary reason Starla's life had been a living hell. But recently? Ever since Starla had bared her fangs, the entire Yelchin family combined hadn't been able to land a single blow against her.
