A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 57

Trapped in his embrace, Starla's eyes narrowed. "Let go."

Her voice was cold, utterly devoid of warmth. It was a coldness that made Fairfax wonder what her smile looked like when she was with Herbert. The thought made his grip tighten uncontrollably.

"Starla, we are not divorced. You'd better get rid of any inappropriate ideas you have in that head of yours."

"If you think I've betrayed you, then divorce me. Why should I get rid of anything? I won't!"

Fairfax let out a dangerous laugh. "Divorce? Don't even think about it for the rest of your life."

He would never let her go.

Hearing his resolute tone, Starla closed her eyes and drove her knee up toward his groin. But he seemed to anticipate her move, his long leg moving to block her attack. Her attempt foiled, she glared up at him, seething.

Fairfax swept her up into his arms. "You vicious woman," he muttered. "Are you trying to ruin my future happiness?"

"I'm saying this one last time. Let. Me. Go." The scent of Brinley clinging to his suit jacket was nauseating, and Starla's voice was laced with disgust.

He looked down at her. "Behave."

Starla closed her eyes again. "I gave you a chance."

"What?"

Before Fairfax could process her words, Starla, whose arms had been loosely around his neck, suddenly clamped her hands on his head and slammed her forehead into his temple.

A sickening thud was followed by a sharp ringing in Fairfax's ears. A wave of intense pain shot through his temple, making his vision blur. "Starla!" he roared, the pain forcing him to release her.
