A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 539

The moment Caden left the Yelchin Group building, he called Starla.

As soon as she answered, he asked, his voice strained, “Starla, are you still not willing to finalize this divorce?”

“Why do you ask?” Her voice was nonchalant, the easy confidence of someone holding all the cards.

Then again, Caden reflected, Starla had never been one to back down. Even when the Yelchin elders tried to put her in her place, she’d never truly suffered a loss. She might not have been as formidable as she was now, but she always gave as good as she got. That’s why they resented her so much—they could never control her.

They looked down on her background and tried to crush her spirit, but they never succeeded. And now, the tables had turned completely; she was the one crushing them. Caden had seen his fair share of conflicts over the years, but he’d never witnessed the Yelchins being so thoroughly dominated. This wasn’t a fight; it was a one-sided slaughter.

“You’ve even gone after Annika. Fairfax came to me for help!” Caden exclaimed, still shocked that she had targeted the old woman. Things must have gotten really ugly over the last few days. In his opinion, it was because Fairfax still hadn’t faced reality, especially when it came to Brinley. He probably still believed every word that woman said.

Starla chuckled softly. “He asked for your help? Well, you were free to give it a try. Why don’t you see what happens?”

The words ‘give it a try’ were spoken lightly, but her tone sent a shiver down Caden’s spine. With her connection to the Hoggart Group, anyone who helped Fairfax right now would be committing corporate suicide.

“You’re making it impossible for us to stay friends,” he lamented.

“No one’s stopping you. You can continue being his best friend. I have no objection,” Starla replied coolly.
