The mere mention of ‘Starla’ made Annika’s blood boil. She had always been displeased with her granddaughter-in-law's humble origins, and Starla's arrival had soured her relationship with Darleen. Since moving into the luxury care facility, she had cut off contact with them.
Darleen hadn't told her about the family's recent troubles, partly because of Annika’s age and partly because of their strained relationship. If Darleen had called, Annika would have only gloated over her troubles. Life under Starla’s thumb was already miserable enough for Darleen; she had no desire to seek more grief from her mother-in-law.
Annika was supposed to be enjoying her golden years in peace. She never imagined Starla would go this far.
Now, her sharp voice drilled into Fairfax’s ear. “Answer me!”
When he didn’t respond immediately, her temper flared.
Fairfax looked at Starla, his heart hammering in his chest. She was truly ruthless. He never thought she would target Annika.
“Why don’t you… come home for a while?” he suggested, knowing it was impossible for his grandmother to stay there now. Given Starla’s recent methods, once she made a move, there was no turning back.
Annika’s voice was filled with disbelief. “What did you say? Come home? Fairfax, have you lost your mind? You really can’t handle that woman? What has been going on between you two? How dare she interfere with my life? It seems she’s forgotten her place in the Yelchin family!”
Annika was livid. A woman with nothing, who came from nothing, had married into their family without even relatives to her name. And now she was meddling in Annika’s affairs? By what right? What gave her the authority?
