Starla simply hung up.
The dial tone buzzing in his ear made Fairfax feel like his head was about to explode.
When he reached the intersection, he saw them—Starla’s people, blocking the road.
“Just drive through them,” Fairfax ordered Gabriel, his voice cold as ice.
Gabriel hesitated. “They have guns!” he stammered, his heart pounding in his chest.
Starla's crew was ruthless. If they tried to force their way through, they would undoubtedly open fire.
Fairfax fell silent, his chest heaving with a rage he could no longer contain. Guns. His wife’s people were armed. Just how badly had he underestimated her? Herbert had certainly found her a powerful backer. Did Kael really think he could act so recklessly in Marina City without the Hoggart Group’s board finding out and kicking him out for good?
Despite the overwhelming odds, a part of Fairfax still wanted to ram through the blockade.
A gunshot cracked through the air, forcing his car to a screeching halt.
...
Meanwhile, Starla received a call from Garret informing her that Fairfax had tried to break through but had been stopped and was now heading back.
She had intended to take Darleen to the hospital, but Darleen had regained consciousness. Having witnessed what happened to Xenia at the hospital the other day, Darleen knew the cold reception the Yelchins now received everywhere. She refused to go, opting instead to return to her room to change.
Brinley had also changed her clothes, only to be summoned downstairs to work again. Before, they could defy the orders, choosing to go hungry rather than submit. But things were different now. They were being forced.
In the living room, a maid assigned Brinley her tasks. Brinley was still reeling, soaked to the bone. What she needed most was a hot bath, but there was no hot water in her room. She was bundled up in layers, yet a persistent chill clung to her.
Her eyes, brimming with tears, sought out Fairfax, but this time, he didn't look at her. She had been testing his attitude, and his coldness confirmed her fears: he was starting to believe the rumors about her and Felix.
