A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 516

“If we don’t resolve our relationship quickly, it won’t do you any good either!” Fairfax threatened.

“Are you saying you’re going to go after Kael? As I said before, be my guest.”

Starla uttered the words “be my guest” so lightly, yet they carried immense weight. Her indifferent expression made it painfully clear to Fairfax that no one had any leverage over her anymore. She was fearless, afraid of nothing.

Fairfax was speechless. When a person has nothing to lose, those who wish to harm them can find no angle of attack. And right now, wasn't that exactly what Starla had become?

Fairfax wasn’t sure how he even managed to walk out of the Yelchin family estate. The air today seemed even colder than yesterday. He saw Xenia and Darleen bundled up in thick coats, shoveling snow. The sight was jarring—their expensive, elegant attire completely at odds with the manual labor they were performing.

Fairfax narrowed his eyes at the scene.

Darleen spotted him. “If you can’t handle this, just stay at the office. Don’t bother coming back.” She genuinely felt for her son. She had initially insisted he return to deal with Starla, but the last few days had shown them the futility of it. No one could handle the new Starla; his presence only made things worse.

When he didn't respond, Darleen's tone grew more urgent. “Did you hear me?” she snapped, blowing on her hands to warm them. It was so cold. Even with the constant movement, she couldn’t generate any warmth, especially in her hands. Without gloves, they felt like they were about to freeze solid.

“You should find some gloves,” Fairfax said quietly.

“Where would I get something like that? Look, just stop standing here in the cold wind and get to your office,” Darleen grumbled, not wanting to talk anymore. The cold was becoming unbearable.
