A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 457

Hearing that the chores weren't finished, Brinley's expression soured further.

"So, we're not eating today?"

Her head was already spinning from hunger. She had considered walking to the main road to have her driver take her to the hospital, but without any food, she doubted she'd make it without collapsing.

And now Sally was telling her she couldn't work anymore? Was she joking? They hadn't eaten all day. If the work wasn't done, they wouldn't get to eat.

"Miss, I'm over fifty years old!" Sally's voice was heavy with meaning.

"What can I do? Starla is deliberately torturing me!" Brinley snapped.

The accusation that Starla was torturing Brinley lit a fire in Sally's own heart. That's right. Starla was targeting Brinley, not her. So why was she being dragged into this mess?

Thinking of the humiliation she had endured over the past two days, Sally suddenly felt the urge to quit."If this continues, my old bones won't be able to take it."

She didn't explicitly say she was quitting, but the implication was clear.

Brinley stared at her, stunned. "You're leaving?"

"Miss, this battle between you and Starla has to end, and soon," Sally said firmly. "Either she goes to prison, or you surrender to her."

Starla had truly left them with no way out. If this torment continued, Sally would definitely quit. But Brinley's situation was different.

"The only way to survive... Hah! Does my life now depend on a handout from Starla?"

Brinley found the thought bitterly ironic. Not long ago, in the Yelchin family, Starla was nothing. What had Herbert seen in her that allowed her to climb so high, to trample all over them? And the Farley family elders, were they insane? How could they turn a blind eye to Herbert's relationship with Starla? She couldn't fathom what they were thinking.

"From the looks of it, yes, you do need her charity," Sally stated bluntly.

The words were harsh, but true. Here, at the Yelchin estate, even their basic survival depended on Starla's mercy. The way they had once trampled on Starla was now being returned to them, a hundred, a thousand times over.
