When Caden got back to his office, his assistant told him Darian had been waiting for him.
Caden strode into the room to find Darian sipping his coffee—a new blend that had just arrived this year. Despite being the most carefree of their group, Caden had the most sophisticated tastes.
Caden loosened his tie and sat down across from Darian.
"Where have you been?" Darian asked. He knew Caden was usually in the office during the day or out of town on business. It was rare for him to leave during work hours.
Caden lit a cigarette. "To see Starla."
The name made Darian sigh. "Fairfax sent you?"
Fairfax had been in a tailspin lately because of Starla's antics, and the chaos at his company was starting to become a real mess. Their own companies had partnerships with Yelchin Group, and Starla's rampage was causing ripples that affected them all, one way or another.
Caden grunted in confirmation, the sound laced with obvious annoyance.
"So, what did Starla say?" Darian asked.
"She's not getting a divorce."
Darian couldn't help but think how, not long ago, this would have been great news for Fairfax. But now, Fairfax was just as determined to end the marriage.
"This couple is a real joke," Darian mused. "First Fairfax refused to divorce, now she does. They're treating their divorce like a game of house!"
But they both knew this was no children's game; it was one filled with rage and hatred. And over the past couple of days, they had both noticed that Starla's methods had become significantly more ruthless.
The words hit Darian like a punch to the gut. ‘Won't survive?’ Was it really that serious?
"Is Herbert really that crazy about Starla?" Darian asked, his eyes wide with shock.
"If this was just about Herbert liking Starla, things wouldn't have gotten to this point," Caden said.
"What? Caden, it's not even at its worst yet?"
"This," Caden said, looking directly at Darian, "is far from the worst of it."
Darian met Caden's deep gaze and felt his breath catch in his throat, a suffocating feeling on Fairfax's behalf. Just looking into Caden's eyes, he felt as if he could see the grim future of Yelchin Group laid bare.
