He knew he couldn't persuade her. Fairfax had sent him to talk to Starla, but honestly, Caden had no intention of genuinely trying.
And he couldn't be blamed for it. He'd seen how Starla had been treated by the Yelchin family, how Fairfax had turned a blind eye while they bullied her. Caden had tried to warn him back then... but Fairfax hadn't listened. Not one bit. He had assumed Starla could handle it, so he pretended not to know.
And now Starla was handling it, with an iron fist, and Fairfax expected him to talk her down? How was he supposed to do that?
Ultimately, Caden believed Fairfax had single-handedly brought this upon himself. His arrogance had made him assume she could handle anything. So now, he had to accept the way she was handling things.
"So, uh, I have a photo here. Take a look?"
Caden pulled out his phone and handed it to her.
Starla glanced at the screen, then looked up at Caden, her brow furrowing. When she spoke again, her tone was icy. "Where did you see this?"
"On Justin Gass's adventure account."
Justin was a renowned medical professor with a passion for mountaineering and exploration. It was his way of de-stressing from the high-pressure world of medicine. He often posted meaningful photos on his public account, which had over ten million followers, and since he knew many influential people, his feed was filled with pictures of him alongside various celebrities. Caden had stumbled upon this particular photo a few days ago while scrolling.
"You're a fan of social media?" Starla asked.
"It helps me unwind after a long day at work. I enjoy the sense of freedom I get from watching adventure bloggers travel."
Starla just stared at him, saying nothing.
"Oh? Then what are you asking?"
"About you and Yardley."
Ever since he saw that photo, everything seemed to click into place for Caden. It was why, when Darian had mentioned Herbert's support for Starla, Caden had sensed there was more to the story. If it had just been Herbert helping her get back at Fairfax, it wouldn't have been this brutal. But if Yardley was backing her, that was a whole different story.
Starla glanced around. It was only then that she remembered all the Yelchin family servants had been dismissed, replaced by her own people. Brinley and Sally were hiding away in their rooms. The two women who had once strutted around the estate with such arrogance now seemed to do everything they could to avoid her. As long as Starla was around, Brinley hardly ever left her room.
"He's my brother," she said, deciding not to hide it from Caden.
