A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 307

When Gabriel arrived, summoned by Fairfax's call, he found his boss slumped against the wall beside the elevators, his face pale.

Gabriel froze. "Sir? What happened to you?"

Fairfax, grimacing in pain, waved a dismissive hand. "Have someone keep an eye on the auction. Take me to the hospital."

He felt dizzy and nauseous. Herbert's kick might have caused some serious damage.

Damn that Starla! On the phone, she had so gently promised not to divorce him, only to turn around and attack him hours later. He could almost stomach her kicking him, but for her and Herbert to do it together...

As he replayed the moment he blocked the elevator doors, a horrifying thought occurred to him. He hadn't seen it clearly, but he had a sickening feeling they had both kicked him in the stomach at the same time.

"Right away, sir. But what—" Gabriel started to ask what had happened.

Fairfax cut him off with a single cold glare. The look was enough to silence Gabriel instantly.

"I'll take you to the hospital now," he said quickly, helping Fairfax away.

...

Back in the auction hall, Darleen was on pins and needles. After Herbert and Fairfax left, the bidding had become fiercely competitive again. When a stunning red diamond came up, the price soared. Several unfamiliar faces seemed to be bidding against her with malicious intent, raising her price by a single dollar every time.

One dollar! The mockery was blatant, and Darleen knew exactly who was behind it. Herbert? Or Starla?
