A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 216

The last word, "okay?", was spoken so softly, so tenderly, it was almost a caress. Starla laughed. "Forget everything?"

"Yes, let's forget it."

She laughed again, a sharp, bitter sound. "You say that as if I'm the one who wronged you. You're the one willing to 'forget'? Is it really your place to offer such a magnanimous pardon?"

Fairfax’s breathing grew heavy.

"I was pregnant with two babies," Starla said, her voice sharp. "And Brinley made me lose both of them, and now you… you, Fairfax, are telling me you'll forget about it? Ha!"

Didn't he hear how ridiculous he sounded?

Fairfax grabbed her hand. "I meant you should forget it. Let go of the past."

"Is that an order?" Starla tried to pull her wrist free.

Fairfax tightened his grip. "Starla…"

"Your family did something disgusting, and you're ordering me to forget it! Fairfax, do you want me to remind you what you do to people who betray you?"

She remembered it vividly. Not long after they were married, she'd seen him personally take a man’s hand as punishment for leaking company secrets to a rival. The sight had left her shaken for days.

At the mention of betrayal, Fairfax's expression darkened further. The air in the room felt thin, suffocating.

"You're so generous, aren't you? Ready to let it all go? And now you expect the same of me?" Starla finally wrenched her hand free. "Believe me or not about the pregnancy, I don't care. But I will never be generous enough to just 'let go' of what you and Brinley did. A divorce will end all of this."
