Especially after learning that the initial feud with the Yelchins had stemmed from manipulated truths, Elmer knew there was only one way this could end: one of them had to die. He had been terrified Starla would be too soft to do what was necessary, but clearly, his daughter was no fool. Nobody was going to break her spirit.
"Father," Starla greeted him quietly.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
"I want to go lie down."
"Go on."
Starla nodded and walked away.
Once she was out of earshot, Elmer's demeanor shifted to absolute ice. He looked at David Nash. "Find out if that bastard is dead."
"Understood," David replied.
"And..." Elmer paused, a lethal edge sharpening his tone, "If he isn't, finish the job."
Elmer had wanted to deal with Fairfax for a long time. The man had been scurrying around in the shadows for days, riling Yardley up and bringing chaos to their doorstep. The Yelchin family had brought nothing but misery to both of his children.
If they had just lived peacefully, Elmer could have been tolerant. But both Fairfax and Susanna had actively tried to take his daughter's life. He wasn't about to let that kind of threat breathe another day.
"Consider it done," David said. Even without the explicit order, David would have handled it. Yardley's manic behavior over the Yelchins had been a disgrace to the Hoggart family's reputation. Fairfax and his sister were nothing but a disease. Since they refused to bow out gracefully, they would be removed permanently.
...
Starla barely remembered the walk back to her private quarters. Romy and Tanya stayed close by her side.
Starla glanced at Tanya's stomach. "Call Darian. Tell him to come get you."
"I already did," Tanya replied softly.
