Sometimes, when a man was thinking irrationally, a good beating was exactly what he needed.
"Where do you think the way out is for us?" Fairfax asked, downing another half bottle of liquor.
His mind was clouded with alcohol, but his thoughts were consumed by one desperate idea: a way out. A way forward for him and Starla. He couldn't take this current reality anymore.
Caden blinked, stunned. "What did you just say?"
"Is there a path forward for me and her?"
Caden was speechless. A path forward? After everything that had happened, after all the destruction, Fairfax's deepest, alcohol-fueled desire was still to have a future with Starla?
But how could they?
There was no future left. The possibility had died the moment he had turned his back on her for Brinley Seabrook.
Fairfax closed his eyes in agony. "I never wanted it to get to this point."
"There's no chance for you two anymore. Give it up," Caden said. It was cruel, but it was reality. They had crossed the point of no return. What 'way out' was there? They'd be lucky not to slaughter each other.
Fairfax's chest tightened painfully. No chance. He knew deep down that it was completely over between them.
