No one could understand the absolute shock that had ripped through Susanna when she heard Herbert was back.
The man was supposed to be dead. The oppressive, suffocating grief that had hung over them following the news of his and Starla's alleged deaths still felt fresh.
But if Herbert was alive... then Starla had to be alive too.
Which meant her violent crusade against the Yelchins had been built on a total lie.
Susanna felt sick to her stomach. She had unleashed hell on her own family to avenge her mother, all based on a mistake. If the premise of her revenge was flawed, didn't she have to answer for the blood on her hands?
When Yardley remained silent, she pressed harder. "Is she? Yes or no?"
"Stop asking questions and eat your food," Yardley snapped, refusing to meet her gaze.
He couldn't stand the loss of control. To this day, Garret's team hadn't figured out how the airtight evidence had been compromised. It was the most catastrophic failure that had ever occurred under Yardley's watch.
Susanna took a shaky breath. "She is. She's alive."
His evasion was all the confirmation she needed.
Her red-rimmed eyes suddenly burned with a venomous, unadulterated hatred. She had never loathed someone so deeply in her entire life.
Yardley ran a hand over his face, looking uncharacteristically agitated.
"So tell me," Susanna's voice was deadly quiet. "What price is she going to pay for this?"
The temperature in the room plummeted. "Price?" Yardley repeated, his tone dripping with warning.
"Yes. She orchestrated the collapse of my family. The absolute ruin we're in right now is entirely her fault. Shouldn't she have to pay for what she's done?"
Yardley's jaw flexed.
