Her heart, already racing, hammered violently against her ribs.
Starla's breath hitched. "How did this happen?"
"I don't know the specifics, but he's unleashed his men to hunt you down."
Starla closed her eyes. *He's hunting me. He knows.*
"You have to be so careful, Starla. He hates you to the core right now. He's saying your mother's death had absolutely nothing to do with his family!"
It was a convoluted, tragic mess. Whether it was directly related or not, it had been years of escalating warfare. In a fit of pure vengeance, Yardley had dismantled the Yelchin family and orchestrated those deaths. Fairfax would undoubtedly place the entirety of the blame squarely on Starla's shoulders. After all, she was the catalyst for all of it.
"Fairfax is completely unhinged right now," Tanya warned, her voice trembling. "If he gets his hands on you, he'll tear you apart. His family meant everything to him!"
The Yelchins might have been awful people, but to Fairfax, they were his blood. He had always fiercely protected them. Now, with them gone, he had nothing left to lose and everything to avenge.
Tanya sounded utterly overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the chaos.
Starla took a shuddering breath, her mind spinning. She instinctively glanced at Romy, but immediately dismissed the thought.
It couldn't be Romy. If Romy, who was working for Amos Kunan, had sold her out to Fairfax, Fairfax wouldn't be blindly searching—he would already be kicking down the door in Smaro Town.
So how did the secret get out?
"Starla? Are you there?"
"I'm listening," Starla whispered.
"Just... hide. Please. He's a monster right now. I swear, if he finds you, he's going to kill you."
Regardless of whatever twisted love Fairfax had once held for her, this time, there would be no mercy.
"He wants me dead?" Starla murmured.
