"Why Herbert?"
What right did he have?
If it were Yardley Hoggart, it would make sense. Yardley was Starla's biological brother. Whatever he had done, he was family. But Herbert? He was nobody.
"Because Yardley allowed him to take her. Why else?" Amos replied simply. Without Yardley's permission, Herbert couldn't have taken Starla anywhere.
Hearing that Yardley had approved made Fairfax's chest tighten uncomfortably. They had conspired against her while she was alive, and now that she was gone, they were making decisions for her!
"Where is Herbert now?" Fairfax asked, his eyes narrowing to dangerous slits.
"Why do you ask?" Amos's temples throbbed. Seeing Fairfax's intense, aggressive demeanor, he knew the man wanted to hunt them down and snatch her back. Even though she was completely gone, he still wanted to fight for her? Amos could understand the grief; despite being a bastard, some part of Fairfax's feelings for Starla had been genuine. If it had been Yvonne, Amos would have gone mad too. But Herbert...
"I'd advise you to drop it," Amos warned.
Fairfax glared at him in icy silence.
