As soon as Darian left, Fairfax couldn't sit still any longer. Forgetting about the rest of his meetings, he grabbed his keys and drove straight to the hospital.
Starla was getting ready to be discharged. When Fairfax arrived, he found the men Gabriel had sent being blocked by Herbert's guards. Furious, he strode forward and threw a punch at each of the two men.
Inside the room, Starla heard the commotion. She looked at Garret, who said, "It's Fairfax."
Her expression hardened at the name. "Let him in," she said, her voice flat.
After she returned to Cosmos Summit, she probably wouldn't be allowed out for a week. Her brother, Yardley Hoggart, had called earlier, his affectionate tone laced with stern reproach. He'd threatened to shut down her biotech company and her studio if she ever dared to venture out so recklessly again. Starla couldn't bear that; she had poured her heart and soul into those ventures.
"Yes, Miss," Garret nodded.
Fairfax was already seething from the drive over, Darian's words echoing in his mind. The phrase 'she's accepting Herbert's help' felt like a knife twisting in his gut. He stormed into the room and saw Starla already dressed in her own clothes, her hospital gown discarded on a chair.
"You're checking out?" he demanded, his face grim.
"That has nothing to do with you," Starla replied coolly.
"Then who does it have to do with?" Fairfax's voice rose. "Starla, you've got some nerve. Now your own husband needs permission from Herbert's men just to see you?"
