A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1048

Amos had been in Cyrus Sea, but he knew exactly what had gone down in Marina City. During the fallout between Starla and the Yelchin family, Fairfax had ultimately sided with his blood relatives. That was the whole reason his marriage imploded in the first place. Their relationship was hanging by a thread as it was. If Fairfax pulled another stunt like that, it would be shattered beyond repair.

Fairfax lit a cigarette, taking a drag and ignoring him. Sometimes, Amos's mouth was just too infuriating to deal with.

...

Outside, Yvonne caught up to Starla. She didn't speak right away, just sat down beside her, feeling the heavy, suffocating aura radiating from her.

They stared out at the ocean for a long time. Neither of them said a word until the sun began to beat down on them.

"Let's head back inside," Yvonne finally suggested. "You're going to get sunburned."

She didn't know how to comfort her. She knew this was about Susanna and Yardley's insane demands. After all these years, Yardley was still a bastard, refusing to let his own sister live in peace. And poor Susanna—getting tangled up with a man like Yardley was the worst luck in the world.

Starla didn't move.

Yvonne sighed. "Things are really complicated right now. Try not to push Fairfax too far."

Truth be told, Yvonne wasn't sure what Fairfax was going to do either. She was terrified he actually would trade Starla. If that happened, all hell would break loose.

"I'll bet you," Starla said suddenly.

"Huh? Bet what?"
