Amos was momentarily speechless.
Whenever death threats started flying, he knew better than to argue. Who could actually guarantee something like that? She was a living, breathing, fiercely independent woman, not some toy you could just lock in a drawer!
"Fine, fine, fine. I'll tell Romy to stick to her 24/7."
He decided to just pretend all his highly logical analysis a moment ago was meant for the wall. He had tried to give good advice, but clearly, reasoning with Fairfax right now was completely useless.
"Oh, by the way, Herbert has been investigating you," Amos mentioned.
"Does he know I'm alive?"
Hearing that Herbert was digging into him again, Fairfax's expression turned pitch black.
"Probably not. He most likely just realized that I wasn't the only one moving against Licht."
"Well, she hired people too, didn't she?"
Technically, Amos hadn't acted alone—Starla had brought in her own mercenaries.
"He probably sensed a third force entirely!"
Fairfax fell silent.
If that was the case, Herbert was definitely trying to unearth the truth behind the shadows.
"Ignore him!" Fairfax ordered coldly.
He and Herbert used to be as close as brothers. But now, because of Starla, their relationship had entirely deteriorated. If Herbert had merely fallen in love with her, Fairfax could have swallowed his pride—after all, it was his own fault he had lost his wife.
But Herbert... Herbert had actively put her life in danger.
That was the unforgivable line that made them sworn enemies.
...
Amos left the room.
Left completely alone, Fairfax furrowed his brow, his mind hazy and chaotic.
No one knew the sheer willpower it took for him to survive that operating table. He missed Starla. His mind was completely consumed by her...
Even though that old bastard Licht was dead and her path should finally be clear of lethal threats, the memory of what the Hoggart family had done to her kept him in a state of sheer panic.
Countless times when his consciousness was slipping away into the void, he had fought violently to open his eyes.
