"Isn't that right?" Valerian let out a soft laugh. "Honestly, those guys aren't anything special. Have you seen the way Calliope acts? She doesn't even acknowledge us as her brothers. Like if she gets all buddy-buddy with those other brothers, we'll just roll over and treat her better? Please."
"What makes her so special, anyway? I'd love to see how far those brothers of hers would go for her if we weren't around."
Ulysses glanced at Valerian, frowning slightly.
"Valerian, they haven't said a bad word about us. Not even once. In fact, it's like we don't even exist. To them, we're just background noise. They don't care about us at all."
"And Callie doesn't mention us either. I think she really doesn't care about us anymore. What she cares about are those other brothers. They've known each other since before she could walk."
"Forget about blood ties for a second. They've been there for her way more than we ever have. Honestly, what did we ever give her? Do you even remember her birthday? Do you remember what gifts we got her? Do you even remember what she was doing on her last birthday?"
Ulysses's questions hung in the air.
Valerian froze, blindsided by the truth. He searched his memory, but realized he barely knew anything about Calliope at all. All the times he could have spent with her, he was off with Lisette instead.
A dark look crossed Valerian's face. He couldn't believe it. He'd always thought he was a good brother to Calliope, but looking back now, he realized he'd done almost nothing. No wonder she didn't care about them.
Lisette seemed to sense something was off. She didn't dare let them keep digging up old memories. If everyone started thinking about the past, they'd all realize it was always Lisette who interrupted their time with Calliope.
