A Mysterious Man novel Chapter 8

I entered to the bedroom after putting on my pajamas to find Edgar curled up on the bedspread near the pillow. Rubbing a hand over his head I muttered to him "Some guard cat you are. I thought you were supposed to hate him."

My response was a mix between a growl and a purr, and I just ignored it while I pulled the covers back to get into the bed. I turned the lamp on the bedside table off and rested my head on the pillow. A few seconds later, a soft, furry body snuggled up next to me and curled into my body. I ran a hand over Edgar's fur as he purred, letting it lull me enough to lose consciousness.

WAKING up to my annoying alarm, I slipped out of the nice warm bed. I felt the instant chill of the air around me even though it was summer and it should have been hot. The air conditioning in the house was blasting and at the very least it let me know that it worked properly. My socked feet slid on the floor as I stumbled toward the bathroom, still half asleep and trying to keep my bladder from exploding on me.

While I was sitting on the toilet, attempting to keep myself awake, Edgar came into the bathroom and jumped up onto the counter, dipping his paws into the sinks as if to find some leftover water. Finishing my business, I went to the counter and turned the faucet to Edgar's sink on, letting the water flow for a few seconds before turning it off again. Edgar sank down onto his haunches and stared at the water droplets, his creepy eyes trained on them. I used the other sink to wash my hands before going back into the bedroom to figure out what I was going to wear. It had to be something at least decent, or I would never hear the end of it from my mother.

Going down into the kitchen and finding breakfast waiting for me on the table was a nice surprise. Heels clicked as my mother walked into the room holding two glasses of orange juice. She set them down on the stone coasters and padded over to me as quickly as her high heels would allow.

"Morning sweetheart," she said as she bent down to press a light kiss to the top of my head.

There was the part of me that wanted to chuckle under my breath as I relived all the "not so good" things that I had done without getting caught - thanks to the mess ups of my sisters, but I knew that my mom would figure it out. I didn't chuckle under my breath for no reason after all.

Kennedy came zooming around the corner and her eyes widened when she took in the spread before her. She was panting as she sat down in one of the two set places that were left at the table. Kennedy immediately grabbed at the stack of pancakes in the middle of the table and then added close to ten pieces of bacon to her plate. This I did chuckle at. Kennedy loved her bacon.

I was taking a large bite of a chocolate chip pancake when Grayson rounded the corner and then sat at the last available seat. After my beginning glance at him I started to choke on the bite I had taken, remembering what had happened the night before. My face flushed as I coughed, trying to get my airway unblocked.
