The passing of time had taken away their youth and also their feelings. Jack became certain then that being together with Bella had become an impossibility.

It made every second that he spent with her feel like he was sitting on pins and needles, and he was nearly overwhelmed with the urge to run away as quickly as possible. Thus, Jack made the executive decision to take matters into his own hands.

They stood together on the bridge for a few more moments before Jack mumbled, "I… Something came up suddenly. If there's nothing else, I'll be taking my leave for now."

His words did not match the emotions in his heart. He hoped that Bella would try to get him to stay.

Bella finally decided that it was a good time for her to speak. "Why don't we get dinner together?"

"There's no need," Jack rejected her suggestion decisively.

Although Bella had done what he had hoped and tried to get him to stay, Jack felt even more disappointed than before. He could tell from her tone and expression that she was just being courteous by asking him to have dinner together.

Jack recalled the times he had spent jogging with Bella in the mountains behind Alnewgo University. He also thought about the time when Bella had sought him out first, suggesting to rekindle their relationship after they had a fight. She had told him then that she wasn't willing to let go of him. Her words had moved Jack to the core.

At that moment, he hoped that a miracle would happen. He hoped that Bella would sprint toward him and hold him tight, telling him that she didn't want him to go. They would get back together then and spend the rest of their lives together.

Unfortunately, the miracle he had hoped for did not happen. As he disappeared into the night, he didn't hear Bella's hurried footsteps as she chased after him. He didn't hear her sighs either, or receive any indication from her that she wanted him to stay.

Jack was thoroughly convinced that they had reached the end of their relationship, but he had no idea what thoughts Bella was keeping hidden in her heart.

The truth was, Bella really wanted to have dinner with Jack. She wanted to run over to him to tell him that her indifference was not how she truly felt about him.
