Tatiana asked curiously, "Jack, which university are you attending?"
"Alnewgo University," Jack replied. All the younger cousins fell silent.
Alnewgo University was in the top rank, alongside Lightfield University and Tarrington University in the capital. The difference wasn't significant, even if it wasn't quite on par with Fullerton. If anything, they each had their strengths!
Any cynical comments they had planned to make were suddenly stuck in their throats.
Greta was equally stunned. She'd intended to humiliate Jack, but instead, she was left embarrassed.
Compared to Alnewgo University, which ranked among the top ten or even top five schools in the country, Greta's school, the University of Iower, paled in comparison.
But Greta wasn't one to easily admit defeat. "What's so great about Alnewgo University? Knox got into Lightfield University, and that's way more impressive than Alnewgo."
"Greta, that's enough. Do you even know how many points and how much effort it takes for a person in a low social rung to get into Alnewgo? Do you really think Knox's degree in Lightfield holds more weight than Jack's degree in Alnewgo?"
Maverick had just been watching the younger ones bicker without any intention of stepping in, but Greta's dismissive tone crossed a line.
The truth was, Knox only got into Lightfield thanks to some serious string-pulling. His father had personally gone to speak with the university president to get him admitted.
In contrast, Jack had spent years working his way up from the bottom, enduring countless hardships to earn his spot at Alnewgo. In terms of merit and value, his achievement far surpassed Knox's.
But Greta wasn't having it. "Maverick, stop defending an outsider. I just know Lightfield's better than Alnewgo. If he's so great, he should be able to hit Lightfield's cut-off admission score. Can he? Can he?"
"I just remember I was the top scorer in the state. I figure no matter how high LightfieldsÆ™ cutoff is, the state's top scorer should've made it, right?"
The table fell silent.
State's top scorer? Did Jack just say he was the state's top scorer?
Everyone stared at Jack in disbelief. Watching their stunned reactions, Jack felt his quiet boast had landed just right.
"Oh my god! The top scorer gas good state? Are you serious?" Tatiana nearly exclaimed.
Maverick's eyes widened in surprise as he asked, "Jack, did you really top your state's college entrance exam?"
