As twilight deepened and the sun sank below the horizon, painting the sky in layers of brilliant color, Adelaide and Paisley finally felt a measure of relief.

The case wasn’t fully closed, but it was in a holding pattern, allowing them to relax a little.

“Hunt is being executed tomorrow. Do you think the Shumans will even claim his body or handle the funeral?” Paisley asked.

“Hard to say.” Adelaide’s thoughts were still fixed on Hespere wanting to take the child.

Paisley knew her well and immediately guessed what was on her mind. “You’re thinking about Luna Hespere and if she’s really going to bring that baby back to the pack?”

“That’s what she said, but I’m not sure if it was a spur–of–the–moment decision.”

Paisley sighed. “Even though these children are victims of Madison’s plot and completely innocent, why does Hespere have to bear all this pain and humiliation? The appearance of that child throws her stable life into such a difficult and awkward position. All those seemingly perfect years now feel like a cruel illusion. It’s just heartbreaking.”

“She asked me in the car what I would do if I were in her place.”

Adelaide walked on, sighing. “What do you think I’d do if Lance had an affair and a child outside our mating?”

Paisley answered without hesitation. “If it were the old you from Warscar, you’d probably gather every force you could muster and teach him a lesson. But the current you? You’d choose to separate, and you’d both start a new life, leaving each other alone.”

Adelaide couldn’t help but smile. “I shouldn’t let you get to know me so well. You know exactly what’s in my head.”

“What? Don’t I know you?” Paisley shot her a look, her tone full of easy familiarity.

“And what about you? What would you do?” Adelaide countered.

Paisley chuckled softly. “That would never happen to me. I’m never going to mate, so I don’t have to face that possibility.”

“Fair point.” Adelaide nodded in agreement.

Paisley then asked, “You know I have no interest in mating. You support that, right? You and Lance are so happy, would you ever try to convince me to find a mate, too?”

“Why would I? Your life is your own to decide. All I can do is support you and help when you need it. Romantic love isn’t the be–all and end–all of life, and it’s not the only path to happiness. Your definition of happiness is clear: enough money, freedom to spend your time as you wish, doing what you want, and having no one force you to do what you don’t. That’s a great life.”

Paisley raised her chin proudly. “Exactly! My life is better than most people’s. I should be happy every day. I can lazily waste my time if I want, or I can join you in doing something meaningful. It’s all up to me.”

“As long as you’re happy with it.” Adelaide’s eyes were full of gentle warmth.

That evening, Hespere brought her son, Heath, to Stanley’s study.

Stanley had been locked away in his study for days, unwilling to come out.

Lycan Erasmus had actually known about the Julia situation for a while–even more than Stanley realized, including Julia’s attempt to approach Heath first.

Thankfully, Lycan Erasmus had only given him a brief reprimand and dropped the matter.

But Stanley himself couldn’t move past it. He thought he had fooled his wife, but too many people in the pack knew. Even if they didn’t speak up, they were certainly gossiping behind his back.

His authority was almost non–existent now.

“Father!” Heath’s voice came from outside the study door.

Stanley coughed a few times before answering, “What is it?”

He really didn’t want to talk to his son about this, or anyone for that matter. He just wanted to suffer through this difficult time alone.

Heath replied, “Mother is worried about you and wants to talk.”

Heath still believed his mother didn’t know about Julia, only that his father was struggling, which is why he agreed to bring her to talk some sense into him.

Hearing Hespere had come, Stanley forced himself to rally, coughing deliberately again before getting up to open the door.
