Rosa looked at her, squinting, “You’re not her–how could you understand her pain? What do you know?”

“I’m not her, nor do I comprehend this twisted mindset where a slight grievance or setback warrants others‘ deaths,” Adelaide said icily.

“What else could she possibly desire? Even if my father had mated her, and the Lycan King had allowed him to return to battle–would she truly have permitted it? Her love is possessive and dictatorial, utterly devoid of respect.”

“No, that’s just your assumption,” Rosa shook her head.

“You don’t understand her years of inner torment. She hasn’t been well. Had she mated with your father as wished, she would have respected all his decisions and taken pride in him.”

“Who are you fooling? Do you even believe that yourself?”

Adelaide’s expression was indifferent. “How could someone who values life so little be expected to release my father, letting him quell rebellions and defend territories?

“How could someone who seeks momentary relief through countless lives and bloodshed be expected to support my father without complaint?”

Tears welled in Rosa’s eyes but didn’t fall. Her expression was bleak, “She knew of your father’s ambitions–how could she stand in his way?”

She walked out, Lance emerging from behind the partition and following her, ordering Rosa to be returned to her cell.

Adelaide said, “Give her a couple of days to calm down. We’ll need to interrogate her again. She knows where Hunt’s daughters are, the whereabouts of Madison’s former confidants, and whether the manor’s staff–replaced in batches–were killed or not.”

“Rest assured, all of this will come to light,” Lance said.

They headed toward the Ministry’s front yard when Dennis came rushing over. “Alpha Lance, Gamma Adelaide, the box has been dug up. There’s a notebook inside, detailing everyone’s origins, names, ages upon arrival, and for some, ages and manners of death.”

“Let’s go,” Lance said, his eyes darkening.

Each took a notebook.

Adelaide’s listed every child’s gender and their mother’s identity.

Lance’s detailed each breeder’s background, name, age, and how they entered the manor.

After, reviewing their own, they swapped.

Adelaide found a she–wolf from Blue Ridge, the youngest in her family.

Rosa had noted an 80% resemblance to Adelaide’s mother.

Adelaide scanned the notebook for Maya’s name but found it only once.
