Lance felt the weight of Lycan Erasmus’s presence, enough to make lower–ranking wolves hold their breath and still their pheromones.
He pretended to ponder for a moment, maintaining a steady cedar aura.
His pupils narrowed subtly into vertical slits, masking his concerns for the wolf generals, before he said, “As for wolf generals, I currently have no suspicions.”
Lycan Erasmus wasn’t satisfied. His pheromones rippled faintly, like a stone skimming a lake, creating oppressive ripples.
Yet he restrained his irritation and calmly stated, “You, the Ministry of Justice, will handle the Madison mansion case. I’ll assign others to investigate the wolf generals.”
He twirled the wolf–head ring on his thumb, its cold white sheen–a trait of the Lycan royalty. Every move radiated unchallengeable authority.
Lance acknowledged, his cedar aura subsiding slightly in obedience.
Lycan Erasmus shifted gears, asking, “You mentioned earlier that you and Adelaide have no immediate plans for children, correct?”
“That’s right,” Lance replied.
Lycan Erasmus hummed, his pheromones steadying. “Adelaide is deputy commander of the Ironthorn Legion–sharp and steady, a perfect fit. Now that you’re Minister of Justice, relinquish your Ironthorn command. I’m promoting Adelaide to commander.”
Lance was taken aback. His cedar aura wavered, pupils sharpening into slits.
He hadn’t anticipated Lycan Erasmus granting Adelaide real power.
Though he quickly composed himself, his surprise was evident. “You mean she’ll hold actual
command?”
“Absolutely,” Lycan Erasmus confirmed.
Lance hedged, “Our kingdom has had she–wolves as temporary officers but never in official roles.”

“Precedents can be set,” Lycan Erasmus insisted.

Lance couldn’t quite read Lycan Erasmus’s intentions—by putting Adelaide in charge of the Ironthorn Army, had Erasmus finally laid aside his wariness of Lance?
Or did he have some deeper motive?
He explained, “Adelaide told me she wants to start a she–wolf school and planned to resign as deputy commander. Since the position was honorary, she hasn’t submitted her resignation.”
Erasmus dismissed this. “No need for resignation. The position is no longer honorary. The Ironthorn Legion includes the Capital Guard and Royal Guard. I’m handing her the legion’s command. I expect her to rise to the challenge.”
Lance fell silent. Lycan Erasmus probed, “No confidence in her? Or do you prefer to keep her confined to the pack?”
Lance smiled. “I support her fully. She never mentioned office, only the school. May I discuss it with her first?”
Lycan Erasmus wouldn’t allow it. “No need. I’ll issue the order directly. As for her school, Clarissa will support it. Speaking of which, I have a fitting candidate to recommend–Abigail.”
With that, Lance knew further objection was futile.
He looked at Lycan Erasmus and asked point–blank, “You said you wanted to talk as brothers. So why put Adelaide in charge of the Ironclaw Legion?”
“The Ironthorn Legion comprises the Capital Guard, Royal Guard, and your personal wolf guard. While nominally under the legion, the Capital and Royal Guards have operated separately. My role as commander has been largely ceremonial. Are you now placing all under Adelaide’s control?”
Erasmus pondered briefly. “The Ironthorn Legion has three branches: Capital Guard, Royal Patrol, personal wolf guard, and patrol units–all under her command.”
This deepened Lance’s confusion.
Was Erasmus relinquishing his carefully cultivated influence?
It didn’t align with his usual caution.
Once wary of the Blackthorn Pack, he now elevated Adelaide without checks.
Why the sudden trust?

Erasmus said, “The decision stands. You’re excused from today’s royal meeting. Secure Madison’s princess mansion and bring the relevant personnel back for interrogation. If your methods fail, hand her over to Adelaide.”
Lance frowned. The case was with the Ministry of Justice. Now Erasmus wanted Adelaide to take over if Madison didn’t cooperate.
It seemed Erasmus intended for Adelaide to employ harsher tactics.
