This kind of chaos was the norm for the Foster family. Tanya had long since grown numb to it.
She couldn't fix them.
In the beginning, she would recklessly throw herself between them to protect Sheila.
She didn't know exactly when she had become so cold-blooded.
Probably when she finally realized that their violent fights were never about her.
It was always about their precious son.
Silas lost his mind hearing that. He lunged forward to slap Sheila, spitting as he cursed at her. "This little bastard turned out this way because you spoiled him! Sheila, marrying you was the worst luck of my life! You took a fortune to pay his debts without even telling me?! You bitch, I didn't even have the right to know?!"
The insults quickly degraded into unbearable filth.
Tanya had heard these exact words countless times before, but her hands still clenched into tight fists at her sides.
She couldn't tell if she was just embarrassed by them making such a humiliating scene in a hospital, or if seeing Sheila cowering like that still evoked a pathetic sliver of pity.
Surprisingly, the one who finally jumped in to stop Silas was Toby.
He hugged Silas's arm, sobbing with dramatic sincerity. "Dad! Dad, don't hit Mom! I know I was wrong! I really know I was wrong..."
Actual tears streamed down his face.
Tanya watched, completely unmoved. Crocodile tears.
But the performance worked on Silas. After all, Toby was his only son.
