The news of Tristan being exiled overnight to the Sydney project reached Rowan's ears the very next morning.
And the person eagerly delivering the gossip was none other than Tristan's own biological son.
Rowan was mildly surprised. "When does that project end?"
"The year after next," Rex answered cheerfully through the phone. He didn't sound the least bit upset about his father's banishment; in fact, he sounded like he was enjoying the drama. "Word is, less than an hour after Grandpa got back to Zephyr Manor last night, my dad was forcibly shoved onto a private jet."
Rowan's tone held a hint of amusement. "Old Mr. Wilkinson actually chose justice over family. Impressive."
"This has nothing to do with justice," Rex corrected bluntly. "His heart just broke for his granddaughter."
"When Grandpa got back yesterday, Jesse told him God-knows-what, and it pissed Grandpa off so much he ended up in the hospital. My grandma said the old man was literally crying in his hospital bed."
"You know my grandpa. He's tough as nails. Back in the day, he took a bullet and had it dug out without a single flinch..."
"Alright, I get it," Rowan interrupted smoothly, perfectly aware of the performance Rex was putting on. "Tell your grandfather thank you for me."
He was genuinely surprised that the Wilkinsons were willing to go this far to protect Elissa.
After all, Tristan was the beloved son Old Mr. Wilkinson had poured all his hopes and dreams into. Elissa was just a granddaughter he had barely met a handful of times.
Relying on blood ties alone, Rowan honestly hadn't expected much from them.
That was exactly why he hadn't mentioned it to Elissa; he hadn't wanted her to get her hopes up only to be let down.
"Thank him for what?" Rex scoffed, genuinely dismissive. "Elissa is my biological sister, and his actual granddaughter. Everything we're doing is the bare minimum. It's what the Wilkinson family owes her."
"Fair enough," Rowan agreed, skipping the pleasantries. "I'll bring Elissa by the hospital later to see him..."
"Don't even think about it," Rex rejected instantly. "My grandma and my mom made it perfectly clear: keep Elissa far away from the hospital."
The family desperately wanted to see her, but a hospital was no place for a pregnant woman if it could be avoided.
"Alright. Then you'll just have to pay your respects on her behalf, Brother," Rowan said effortlessly.
