Inside the room, Elissa finished placing the needles and sat down in the chair beside the bed, just as she always did.
The curtains were drawn, blocking out the sunlight, but for some reason, she still felt a deep, radiating warmth and a profound sense of peace.
Lowering her eyes, she met Suzanne's strong, tender gaze, and suddenly understood why.
Since it was just the two of them, Suzanne didn't want any barriers between them. She softly offered, "If you're upset, just say it. When your grandfather gets back later, I'll have him punish him even more."
The "him" she was referring to was, of course, Tristan.
Old Mr. Wilkinson and Old Mrs. Wilkinson had gone to visit a terminally ill veteran friend and wouldn't be back until later.
"If I'm upset..."
Elissa thought for a moment and smiled honestly. "I'm definitely a little bothered, but it's clear that Old Mr. Wilkinson is ruthlessly impartial."
Stripping him of all his duties.
For Tristan, that was no different from stripping away all his power. He had been a man who held immense authority for half his life. This was definitely enough to teach him a severe lesson.
Suzanne's heart ached at how understanding Elissa was. "Just a little?"
"Yeah, genuinely just a little."
Elissa smiled, joking, "Besides, I'm pregnant. It's not good for me to have huge emotional swings."
Suzanne cast her a fond, exasperated look. Knowing where Elissa stood, she dropped the topic, her gaze softening as she looked at Elissa's stomach. "Is the baby behaving? Is she giving you a hard time?"
Elissa caught the look in her eyes, and suddenly felt a lump in her throat.
If her own mother knew she was pregnant, would she also look at her with such tender anticipation and hidden sympathy?
Elissa turned her head slightly, reining in her emotions before offering a helpless smile. "No, she's great. I'm eating and sleeping fine, and she's very good. She just gives me a little kick every now and then."
She was actually quite surprised herself. Her morning sickness and other symptoms had completely vanished over the past few days.
Aside from her growing belly, she felt exactly as she had before getting pregnant.
Suzanne looked a bit relieved, her eyes practically overflowing with warmth. She smiled and asked, "It doesn't hurt when she kicks you, does it?"
"How did you know?"
